The selection of Andy Warhol's works featured in this volume chronicles the evolution of the American dream from the 1960s to the mid-1980s. In this period, American culture underwent enormous changes: commercial brands were elevated to a totemic status and the tenets of the free-market credo came to pervade every aspect of political, social and cultural life. The founder of Pop art turned his gaze on this system and through the relentless repetition of subjects--an approach borrowed directly from advertising--he transformed products into artistic icons. Commentary by noted Italian art critic Achille Bonito Oliva provides social and artistic context for Warhol's treatment of this topic.
