An exquisite facsimile edition of a turn-of-the-century illustrated children's ABC of animals. This charming volume is a facsimile of a children's ABC of animals first published in 1899. Commissioned by Glasgow publisher Blackie & Son, it contains a short description and a full-page grisaille drawing for each animal, beginning with A for armadillo and ending with Z for zebra, with vignettes accompanying each letter of the alphabet. It was the first publication by Carton Moore Park, who specialized in animal subjects, and whose artistic style was strongly influenced by Japonisme. The quirky drawings, with the modern-looking crops and close-up perspective, made the book stand out from all other alphabets of the day. The plate of the hippopotamus, for example, conveys the great bulk of the animal by forcing it up against the frame, while the image of the bat has flying almost in the reader's face. The picture of the leopard is one of several plates that reveal Moore Park's interest in Japanese art. When the book was published, contemporary critics acclaimed the artist's strong handling and accurate anatomical knowledge, as well as his profound appreciation of the habits and movements of the animals depicted and his close sympathy with his subjects. One wrote that, 'It is certainly the best book of the kind we have ever seen.' A hundred and twenty years after it was first published, this exquisite rediscovered book - very much of its moment but modern in spirit - will enchant and educate a new generation of children. Animals included: A for Armadillo * B for Bear * C for Cat * D for Dromedary * E for Elephant * F for Fox * G for Guinea-Pig * H for Hippopotamus * I for Ibex * J for Jackal * K for Kangaroo * L for Leopard * M for Mice * N for Nylghau * O for Otter * P for Porcupine * Q for Quagga * R for Rabbit * S for Sheep * T for Tiger * U for Unicorn * V for Vampire * W for Weasel * X for two Extraordinary Animals (Anteater and Ornithorynchus) * Y for Yak * Z for Zebra

"Animal Metropolis includes a diverse array of work on the historical study of human-animal relations in Canada. In doing so, it aims to create a starting point for an ongoing conversation about the place of animals in historical analysis and, in turn, about the way issues regarding animals fit into Canada's political, social, cultural, economic, environmental and ethical landscapes. One of the most striking aspects of this collection is its capacity to present a wide variety of topics, sources and methodologies within a tightly focused theme. The sources employed in these articles cover a broad spectrum, from state and legal documents to the popular press, from corporate records and NGO reports to personal diaries, and from materials on industrial agriculture to those of the tourism industry. Even more compelling than the sources are the methodological issues that the collection raises. One of our key objectives is to highlight the sheer diversity of approaches historians are employing in their efforts to analyze non-human subjects that do not produce documentary records of their own. By focusing explicitly on urban contexts the book aims deliberately to cleave from a more obvious focus on wild animals and the wilderness environment that are so iconic to Canada. Readers will be impressed by the range of creatures, both domestic and wild: from horses and dogs to beavers and wolves to whales, fish, polar bears and captive elephants. Covering small and larger regions, and in some instances the nation as a whole, the collection offers impressive breadth in scope. Varying widely in the lenses through which human-animal relations are viewed, it brings to the forefront the contemporary as well as the historical dimensions of the issues it raises."--

With its enticing and colourful design and its fascinating information, this is a book that children will want to pour over-either at home, in the classroom or on a road trip. This book brings together 55 national parks, selected across all Australian states and territories, and over 120 animals. It is divided into seven sections according to habitat (woodlands and grasslands; forests; rainforests; arid zones; mountains; wetlands and waterways; coasts, oceans and islands), each including a number of national parks and a selection of the fish, reptiles, frogs, birds and mammals that inhabit them. At the end of the book is a section on 'little critters'-beetles, spiders, butterflies, grasshoppers, bugs and so on. Each habitat section opens with photographs of the featured national parks and a description of the habitat. Each animal has its own page, which has a stunning colour photograph of the species, a map of its distribution range, its conservation status and scientific information about the species. The information is divided into the following sections: 'Fast Facts' gives you all the vital statistics, such as size, lifespan and number of young; 'Where Does It Live?' tells you where in Australia you can find the species and provides details about its home; 'What's Its Life Like?' tells you a bit about how the animal moves, behaves, eats and has young; and 'Interesting Info' has quirky and fascinating facts. This book features a foreword by the Governor-General of Australia, Sir Peter Cosgrove.
