Developments of antifungal agents have declined as compared to other antibiotics that have displayed a potent development with time. There is an urgent need for both prophylactic and therapeutic treatments worldwide to control the severity of infections caused by Candida. Anticandidal Therapeutics: Discovery and Development provides the readers with a compiled knowledge of the fungal human infection Candida and the development of anticandidal drugs. Anticandidal Therapeutics helps researchers form the basis for the discovery and development of novel anticandidal therapies. In 14 chapters this book provides collective information on anticandidal agents and their discovery and development with respect to major drug transporter families, different stages of anticandidal agent development, recent trends and progress in antifungal translational research, clinical studies status of anticandidal therapeutic agents, and drug repurposing for development of novel anticandidal agents. Highlights the mechanistic actions of some therapeutic agents against Candida Focuses on anticandidal agents rather than general antifungal agents Discusses the stage of development of new antifungal drugs, the repositioning of drugs, and how this could help in treatment

Anticandidal Agents provides the latest information on candida drug resistance and its remedial implications. In this compilation, users will find a comprehensive view on overcoming resistance in anticandidal drugs, along with information on novel molecules. Candida albicans is an opportunistic pathogenic fungus responsible for life threating invasive and nosocomial infections across the globe. Candidiasis is a major cause of morbidity among immunocompromised patients. Infections caused by non-albicans candida like C. glabrata, C. parapsilosis, and C. tropicalis have also imposed a serious threat in the last few decades. Current treatment of candidiasis relies primarily on antifungal agents broadly categorized as azoles, polyenes, echinocandins, allylamines, and pyrimidines. Lately, antifungal resistance has emerged to be an obstruction of current treatment regime. A number of reasons are described in detail. Understanding the mechanisms of resistance is crucial for developing strategies for overcoming the hindrance in current therapeutics. Presents a complete understanding of candida resistance to help in the development of therapeutic expansion and novel drugs Provides thorough information on candida drug resistance and its remedial implications Covers crucial mechanisms of resistance that will help develop strategies for overcoming the hindrance in current therapeutics

Exploring innovative routes of drug discovery in the postgenomic era, Microbial Genomics and Drug Discovery examines bioinformatic and genomic approaches for the identification, detection, selection, and validation of new antibacterial targets and vaccine candidates. The book discusses potential pathways for effective infection control, inhibition of antibacterial resistance, and acceleration of the drug discovery process. This comprehensive reference describes procedures to recognize common targets in various bacterial species for the design of broad-spectrum antibiotics and clearly illustrates the use of pathway tools in a genomics-based drug discovery project.

Fungal infections such as candidoses can range from superficial mucous membrane infection to life-threatening systemic mycoses. Candida infections are a significant clinical problem globally due to rapid rise in compromised host populations including HIV/AIDS, organ transplant recipients and patients on chemotherapy. In addition, sharp increase in aging populations which are susceptible to fungal infections is expected in next few decades. Antifungal drugs are relatively difficult to develop compared to the antibacterial drugs owing to the eukaryotic nature of the cells. Therefore, only a handful of antifungal agents are currently available to treat the myriad of fungal infections. Moreover, rising antifungal resistance and host-related adverse reactions have limited the antifungal arsenal against fungal pathogens. In this research topic, we tried to update the theoretical aspects pertaining to the antifungal drug discovery i.e. proposed novel mechanisms, new drug targets and pathways. In addition, invited authors explored the new antifungal drugs derived from natural and synthetic sources which are currently under development. Contributors were encouraged to bring new insight into the antifungal drug discovery. We hope the reader may arrive at a general consensus on the possible strategies to combat ever increasing ubiquitous fungal infection in this new century.
