Know the animals, respect the planet, love thy neighbor. Rowan Blogg is an Australian veterinarian of the highest distinction and I greatly admire his professionalism, which I observed for years at close range. In Any Kind of Danger he has extended his work into the environment and moral philosophy by tackling the complex issue of how we exploit animals. In the 19th Century William Wilberforce and other pioneers argued that our treatment of animals is a measure of our humanity. Peter Singers Animal Liberation (1975) stimulated international interest in the subject. Dr Bloggs book should do the same. Rowan Blogg examines the role of wildlife on the planet, millions of years before our species became dominant, but how much habitat do we reserve for their natural life? How many species are under threat? The worlds population will stabilise at about nine billion in 2050 and this raises the fundamental issues of how much land, water and energy we will devote to raising animals for food. Is grazing an efficient or humane way of feeding our species? Industrial farming out of sight and out of mind involves inescapable cruelty. Chickens are raised on an A4 size of smaller scratching area, confined in multi-layered cages. Do animals have a right of access to sunlight and paddock for at least the great part of their lives? How does a cow giving birth cope with a crowded cattle truck? Do we turn our eyes away from the inevitable suffering involved in animal transport, especially life sheep exports? There are profound moral lessons to be learned from observing how we treat animals and yet the issue will not be on the agenda for the next Federal or State elections. We are in Dr Bloggs debt for this thoughtful, passionate book. -Barry Jones, AO, FAA, FAHA. FTSE, FASSA Australian Minister for Science 1983-90

This is a specially priced boxed set of the first three novels in The Love & Danger Collection (#1, #2, #3). These books can be read in any order. FIREFLY IN THE NIGHT When William Richards’ beloved adoptive daughter’s life is threatened, the Houston lawyer can think of only one person to protect her: Cord Anderson—the battle hardened, war-weary, mercenary son of an old friend. Cord would keep Marlie safe from outside harm, as well as safe from her own impulses if she were ever to learn that her father’s life had also been threatened. Without a word to Marlie, William Richards hatches a plan. CALL MY NAME SOFTY Is someone trying to kill Anne Reynolds? It was hard to believe. But then it had been hard to believe that the residents of the small town of Overton, California, would turn on her after she testified against the corrupt owners of the town’s largest business. To them, she was to blame for everything bad that followed, and they harassed her to the point of driving her away. Shattered in body and spirit, Anne retreats to the isolation of the beautiful northern California coast, hopeful that the peace and quiet will help her recuperate. Only she’s not as alone as she thought. Robert Singleton—a very attractive man entangled in his own weighty problems—and his determinedly friendly five-and-a-half-year-old son, Jamie, are vacationing in the next cove. Anne does her best to keep her distance...until ‘accidents’ start to happen. NIGHTSHADE Thirty years after the Townsend Collection disappeared, it’s found! Only where it’s found is enough to give anyone pause, especially Christian Townsend, scion of the wealthy and influential Townsend family. Management of the Orsini Museum in San Francisco panics, unsure if the museum can withstand more bad publicity. Sonya Douglas, museum registrar, is given the assignment to placate Christian Townsend. She is to drop her normal work and smooth his way to the best of her ability when he arrives to investigate the puzzling circumstances. Only the more involved Sonya becomes, the more fascinated she is with both the past crime and the man she has been ordered to assist.

The nature of qualitative inquiry means that researchers constantly have to deal with the unexpected, and all too often this means coping with the presence of danger or risk. This innovative and lively analysis of danger in various qualitative research settings is drawn from researchers' reflexive accounts of their own encounters with 'danger'. An original take on the ever-popular topic of the ethics of research, this pioneering book expands the common sense use of the term to encompass not just physical danger, but emotional, ethical and professional danger too, with the authors paying special attention to the gendered forms of danger implicit in the research process. From the physical danger of researching the night club 'bouncer' scene to the ethical dangers of participant observation in an old people's home, these international contributions provide researchers and students with thought provoking insights into the importance of a well chosen research design.
