Paul’s life, letters, and theology are unified by the theme of the overlapping of two ages—this age and the age to come. With the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ, the age to come (i e , kingdom of God) broke into this present age but didn’t end it. Where other important doctrines such as justification by faith, reconciliation, and the cross of Christ were key players in Paul’s theology, Marvin Pate compellingly demonstrates that the overarching theme driving the Pauline corpus was indeed Paul’s inaugurated eschatology. In fact, Paul’s apocalyptic framework was only one of a number of other rival eschatologically focused religious perspectives of the day, such as the Imperial Cult, Hellenistic/syncretistic religion, and the merkabah Judaizers. Paul’s vigorous debates with the churches he served centered on the exclusivity of the gospel of Christ that he preached: the nonnegotiable apocalypse of Jesus the Messiah. Apostle of the Last Days will be welcomed in the classroom as a one-volume treatment of Paul’s life and letters as well as his theology.

The prophet Brigham Young taught the restored gospel of Jesus Christ in a basic, practical way that gave inspiration and hope to the Saints struggling to build a home in the wilderness. Though more than a century has now passed, his words are still fresh and appropriate for us today as we continue the work of building the kingdom of God. President Young declared that as members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints we possess the “doctrine of life and salvation for all the honest-in-heart” (DBY, 7). He promised that those who receive the gospel in their hearts will have awakened “within them a desire to know and understand the things of God more than they ever did before in their lives” and will begin to “inquire, read and search and when they go to their Father in the name of Jesus he will not leave them without a witness” (DBY, 450). This book reflects the desire of the First Presidency and the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles to deepen the doctrinal understanding of Church members and to awaken within them a greater desire to know the things of God. It will inspire and motivate individuals, priesthood quorums, and Relief Society classes to inquire, read, search, and then go to their Father in Heaven for a witness of the truth of these teachings. Each chapter contains two sections—“Teachings of Brigham Young” and “Suggestions for Study.” The first section consists of extracts from Brigham Young’s sermons to the early Saints. Each statement has been referenced, and the original spelling and punctuation have been preserved; however, the sources cited will not be readily available to most members. These original sources are not necessary to have in order to effectively study or teach from this book. Members need not purchase additional references and commentaries to study or teach these chapters. The text provided in this book, accompanied by the scriptures, is sufficient for instruction. Members should prayerfully read and study President Young’s teachings in order to gain new insights into gospel principles and discover how those principles apply to their everyday lives. By faithfully and prayerfully studying these selections, Latter-day Saints will have a greater understanding of gospel principles and will more fully appreciate the profound and inspired teachings of this great prophet. The second section of each chapter offers a series of questions that will encourage thoughtful contemplation, personal application, and discussion of President Young’s teachings. Members should refer to and carefully reread his words on the principle being discussed. Deep and prayerful study of these teachings will inspire members to greater personal commitment and will help them resolve to follow the teachings of the Savior, Jesus Christ. If individuals and families prayerfully follow the principles in this book, they will be blessed and inspired to greater dedication and spirituality, as were the early Saints who heard these words directly from the lips of the “Lion of the Lord” (HC, 7:434)—the prophet, seer, and revelator, President Brigham Young.

Our Lord Jesus Christ said to His disciples: The harvest truly is plenteous, but the laborers are few: Pray ye, therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he will send forth laborers into his harvest. (Matthew 9: 37, 38) Best selling Mystery/Thriller novelist Jeff Pate crosses over to the Christian Fiction genre with Calling of the Twelve, the first installment of an exciting and revealing new series concerning the Great Harvest: The Last-Day Apostles. Pastor Roger Ingram has all the Lord's blessings--at least he believes he does. On his way to visit relatives on Thanksgiving Day 1985, Roger's life changes forever. Dead at the hospital after a car accident, Roger's spirit journeys beyond the worldly realm where he experiences fascinating revelations. His journey ends at the Throne of God where he comes before the Lord Himself. Confident and bold of his salvation, Roger quickly experiences the terrifying wrath, and also the incredible mercy and grace of God. He learns that he has been chosen to embark on the most important mission mankind has ever witnessed: to prepare the world for the Great Harvest and Second Coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. Sent back to earth to wait for the mission to begin, Roger's ministry takes a 180-degree turn, igniting a fire for the truth of the Gospel. Forewarned of future persecution as a result, Roger and his wife Carolyn are commanded by an angel of the Lord to flee their Virginia home to Pilot Mountain, North Carolina where they continue preaching the Truth. Move forward to April 2003: eighteen years after his incredible near-death experience, and just three days after the unexpected death of his wife, Roger is visited by an angel named Boethos. Called Bo,the angel was sent to help the pastor gather the remaining eleven last-day apostles. After being given the new name of Stephen, the spirit-filled pastor and spry angel set out on their mission. Donning the full armor of God, the missionaries begin in New York and travel across the country facing insurmountable forces of Satan--in both spirit and flesh--that will stop at nothing to destroy God's plan. But Stephen and his growing band of apostles remain steadfast in their mission, despite incredible dangers--only to be delivered from the depths of destruction. Calling of the Twelve marks the fictional beginning of the end of this age, and the dawning of incredible events to come when the world will witness the omnipotent authority of God. Much like the twelve original disciples, the last-day apostles begin as a band of lost sheep from every conceivable walk of life and generation, but under the anointing of the Holy Spirit, they become the most powerful messengers of God the world has ever seen.
