It is written wholly from the standpoint of the one who puts up and operates electric circuits and apparatus. It does not touch problems of apparatus design. Pure theory is avoided, except as it has direct bearing upon practical matters. The principles stated and the explana tions of apparatus which are ofiered are only such as are necessary in order to present essential elements. They can be elaborated by the instructor as much as he may see fit. Every teacher understands the importance of numerical prob lems in order to make clear the principles and performance of apparatus. It is with this in mind that the set of problems found at the end of each chapter has been made up. Even though the computations demanded in the solution of many of the problems of this book are not required in everyday practical work, it is important to understand how a thing works; and unless one can make a computation regarding it and figure out a numerical result, no clear conceptions have been secured. Excerpt from Practical Applied Electricity: A Book in Plain English for the Practical Man, Theory, Practical Applications and Examples This book is intended primarily for those persons who are desirous of obtaining a practical knowledge of the subject of Electricity, but are unable to take a complete course in Electrical Engineering. It is the opinion of the author that such persons should have a thorough understanding of the fundamental principles of the subject, in order that they may easily understand the applications in practice. Numerous examples arc solved throughout the book, which serve to illustrate the practical application of certain laws and principles and give the reader an opportunity to more readily grasp their true significance. The text is based, to a certain extent, upon a series of lectures given in the evening classes in the Department of Electrical Engineering at Armour Institute of Technology. The arrangement is not the one usually followed, and to some it may not appear to be logical; but it is one the author has found very satisfactory. Although the book was not originally intended to be used as a text-book, it is, however, especially adapted for use in the practical courses given in the various High and Manual Training Schools, and at the same time gives a substantial groundwork for the more advanced college and university courses. For many years the author has taught the subject of electrical engineering by means of experimental lectures and laboratory work to large numbers of practical men. Since these students have often lacked mathematical training, it has been necessary to explain the subject-matter in a very simple way, showing, wherever possible, its practical features. The same method of presentation has been used in this text, and it is hoped that a much larger audience may thus be reached and benefited. This volume is particularly adapted to courses of instruction given to those engaged in actual electrical work; it should likewise prove useful as a text for high schools and for college laboratory courses.
