Having completed more than twelve public Aquatics Centers across Canada in the past decade, Hughes Condon Marler Architects has developed significant architectural expertise in the design of pools without having ever defaulted to a repetitive aesthetic. "Pools: Aquatic Architecture" traces the evolution of those ideas, beginning at Eileen Dailly Leisure Pool, all the way through to current projects being developed in Surrey, British Columbia. Through orthographic drawings, diagrams, professional photography and editorial text, the strategies employed in each project are clearly illustrated. Editorial direction by Trevor Boddy examines seven completed Aquatics Centres and delves into the design process of one building that is currently under development, in order to bring to light the origin and evolution of ideas that have become HCMA's architectural ethos.

This text is divided into three parts. The first part describes basic toxicological concepts and methodologies used in aquatic toxicity testing, including the philosophies underlying testing strategies now required to meet and support regulatory standards. The second part of the book discusses various factors that affect transport, transformation, ultimate distribution, and accumulation of chemicals in the aquatic environment, along with the use of modelling to predict fate.; The final section of the book reviews types of effects or endpoints evaluated in field studies and the use of structure-activity relationships in aquatic toxicology to predict biological activity and physio-chemical properties of a chemical. This section also contains an extensive background of environmental legislation in the USA and within the European Community, and an introduction to hazard/risk assessment with case studies.

This book contains extended versions of papers presented at the 1st International Conference on Lake Sustainability held at the Wessex Institute of Technology (WIT) campus in the New Forest. The meeting is a natural link in the chain of sustainability conferences that WIT regularly arranges. A wide spectrum of contributions focusing on lake sustainability and many up-to-date aspects of lake management and limnology are covered by the fifteen papers selected for publication The papers draw an excellent picture of the recent developments in lake modelling, limnology of lakes and lake management. Readers will find useful the sustainability image of lakes presented in this volume.

Measurements of variable chlorophyll fluorescence have revolutionised global research of photosynthetic bacteria, algae and plants and in turn assessment of the status of aquatic ecosystems, a success that has partly been facilitated by the widespread commercialisation of a suite of chlorophyll fluorometers designed for almost every application in lakes, rivers and oceans. Numerous publications have been produced as researchers and assessors have simultaneously sought to optimise protocols and practices for key organisms or water bodies; however, such parallel efforts have led to difficulties in reconciling processes and patterns across the aquatic sciences. This book follows on from the first international conference on “chlorophyll fluorescence in the aquatic sciences” (AQUAFLUO 2007): to bridge the gaps between the concept, measurement and application of chlorophyll fluorescence through the synthesis and integration of current knowledge from leading researchers and assessors as well as instrument manufacturers.
