Architecture Of The Information Society

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Laboratory for Computer Science (LCS) hasbeen responsible for some of the most significant technological achievements of the past fewdecades. Much of the hardware and software driving the information revolution has been, andcontinues to be, created at LCS. Anyone who sends and receives email, communicates with colleaguesthrough a LAN, surfs the Web, or makes decisions using a spreadsheet is benefiting from thecreativity of LCS members.LCS is an interdepartmental laboratory that brings together faculty,researchers, and students in a broad program of study, research, and experimentation. Theirprincipal goal is to pursue innovations in information technology that will improve people's lives.LCS members have been instrumental in the development of ARPAnet, the Internet, the Web, Ethernet,time-shared computers, UNIX, RSA encryption, the X Windows system, NuBus, and many othertechnologies.This book, published in celebration of LCS's thirty-fifth anniversary, chronicles itshistory, achievements, and continued importance to computer science. The essays are complemented byhistorical photographs.

Uniting a team of international and interdisciplinary scholars, this volume considers the views of early twentieth-century European thinkers on the creation, dissemination and management of publicly available information. Interdisciplinary in perspective, the volume reflects the nature of the thinkers discussed, including Otto Neurath, Patrick Geddes, the English Fabians, Paul Otlet, Wilhelm Ostwald and H. G. Wells. The work also charts the interest since the latter part of the nineteenth century in finding new ways to think about and to manage the growing body of available information in order to achieve aims such as the advancement of Western civilization, the alleviation of inequalities across classes and countries, and the promotion of peaceful coexistence between nations. In doing so, the contributors provide a novel historical context for assessing widely-held assumptions about today's globalized, 'post modern' information society. This volume will interest all who are curious about the creation of a modern networked information society.

This text addresses the issues in particular order and provides the results of IS & N projects addressing those issues in a synthesized manner, so that the reader can gain insights into the European projects contribution towards the telecommunications software industry.

The augmentation of urban spaces with technology, commonly referred to as Media Architecture, has found increasing interest in the scientific community within the last few years. At the same time architects began to use digital media as a new material apart from concrete, glass or wood to create buildings and urban structures. Simultaneously, Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) researchers began to exploit the interaction opportunities between users and buildings and to bridge the gaps between interface, information medium and architecture. As an example, they extended architectural structures with interactive, light-emitting elements on their outer shell, thereby transforming the surfaces of these structures into giant public screens. At the same time the wide distribution of mobile devices and the coverage of mobile internet allow manifold interaction opportunities between open data and citizens, thereby enabling the internet of things in the public domain. However, the appropriate distribution of information to all citizens is still cumbersome and a mutual dialogue not always successful (i.e. who gets what data and when?). In this book we therefore provide a deeper investigation of Using Information and Media as Construction Material with media architecture as an input and output medium.
