Preorder the next instalment in the emotional wartime Army Girls series from Fenella J Miller. May 1942 Since joining the ATS all Clara Felgate has wanted to do is be a dispatch driver and serve with the brave boys abroad, doing her bit for King and country. But almost as soon as she arrives at Camberley Barracks, Clara seems to bring a string of bad luck with her. Captain Perry Harrow shouldn’t even be at the barracks teaching a bunch of ATS girls how to drive. He should be fighting on the front line with his men. Thankfully Lance Corporal Felgate is perfectly proficient, and Perry finds himself drawn to the hardworking ATS girl. Despite their duties keeping them busy, Clara and Perry are drawn to each other, too. But they both know a relationship would be disastrous. With the war still raging, their future together can’t be guaranteed. Unless they make the most of the time they have and make this one military operation they know will have a happy outcome! Army Girls tells the unique and compelling story of the women who lived and fought during the Second World War. It is a celebration of the phenomenal achievements of women who gave everything to their country and joined the armed forces at the outbreak of war. At long last, the story of their service will be heard, interwoven with events and precious moments from 1939-45. Commemorating the 80th anniversary of the Conscription Act which then allowed British women to enter service into the armed forces, it the final chance to hear the incredible true stories from some of the very last living female veterans of the conflict, who capture a pivotal moment in British history from a woman's perspective. Army Girls is about belonging, resilience, gender, fear, life and death. More than any other oral history from veterans of WWII published, this one is bedded in the present day, too. The Coronavirus pandemic has shaped the last year of these women's lives, there are both parallels and paradoxes. War was about opportunity and comradery, Covid is isolation and resilience, where memory and nostalgia play an even bigger role. This book is a fitting tribute to them all - the living and the dead.

The story of the man who ruled a sprawling ancient empire and strove to defend it against the Roman Republic. A teenage king in 223 BC, Antiochus III inherited an empire in shambles, ravaged by civil strife and eroded by territorial secessions. But he proved himself a true heir of Alexander—defeating rebel armies and embarking on a campaign of conquest and reunification. Although repulsed by Ptolemy IV at the Battle of Raphia, his eastern campaigns reaffirmed Seleucid hegemony as far as modern Afghanistan and Pakistan. Returning westward, he defeated Ptolemy V at Panion and succeeded in adding Koile Syria to the Seleucid realm. At the height of his powers, he challenged growing Roman power, unimpressed by their recent successes against Carthage and Macedon. His expeditionary force was crushed at Thermopylae and evacuated. Refusing to bow before Roman demands, Antiochus energetically mobilized against Roman invasion, but was again decisively defeated at the epic battle of Magnesia. Despite the loss of territory and prestige enshrined in the subsequent Peace of Apamea, Antiochus III left the Seleucid Empire in far better condition than he found it. Although sometimes presented as a failure against the unstoppable might of Rome, Antiochus III must rank as one of the most energetic and effective rulers of the ancient world. This book narrates his eventful career—and examines Seleucid military organization and royal administration.

"In spring 2008, Iraq Veterans Against the War gathered outside Washington, D.C., and testified to atrocities they personally committed or witnessed while deployed in the occupations of Afghanistan and Iraq. In this book are the powerful words, images, and documents of this historic event." "Winter Soldier: Iraq and Afghanistan preserves and honors the participants' courageous contributions in order to ensure that people around the world remember their stories and struggles. The book's documentation includes the testimonies of dozens of veterans addressing such issues as the U.S. military's callous disregard for civilian life, the torture of detainees, the culture of racism that's inherent in a military occupation, gender discrimination, and the health crisis facing today's veterans."--BOOK JACKET.

From the creator of the popular website Ask a Manager and New York’s work-advice columnist comes a witty, practical guide to 200 difficult professional conversations—featuring all-new advice! There’s a reason Alison Green has been called “the Dear Abby of the work world.” Ten years as a workplace-advice columnist have taught her that people avoid awkward conversations in the office because they simply don’t know what to say. Thankfully, Green does—and in this incredibly helpful book, she tackles the tough discussions you may need to have during your career. You’ll learn what to say when • coworkers push their work on you—then take credit for it • you accidentally trash-talk someone in an email then hit “reply all” • you’re being micromanaged—or not being managed at all • you catch a colleague in a lie • your boss seems unhappy with your work • your cubemate’s loud speakerphone is making you homicidal • you got drunk at the holiday party Praise for Ask a Manager “A must-read for anyone who works . . . [Alison Green’s] advice boils down to the idea that you should be professional (even when others are not) and that communicating in a straightforward manner with candor and kindness will get you far, no matter where you work.”—Booklist (starred review) “The author’s friendly, warm, no-nonsense writing is a pleasure to read, and her advice can be widely applied to relationships in all areas of readers’ lives. Ideal for anyone new to the job market or new to management, or anyone hoping to improve their work experience.”—Library Journal (starred review) “I am a huge fan of Alison Green’s Ask a Manager column. This book is even better. It teaches us how to deal with many of the most vexing big and little problems in our workplaces—and to do so with grace, confidence, and a sense of humor.”—Robert Sutton, Stanford professor and author of The No Asshole Rule and The Asshole Survival Guide “Ask a Manager is the ultimate playbook for navigating the traditional workforce in a diplomatic but firm way.”—Erin Lowry, author of Broke Millennial: Stop Scraping By and Get Your Financial Life Together
