Artifact Driven Business Process Monitoring

This book proposes a novel technique, named artifact-driven process monitoring, by which multi-party processes, involving non-automated activities, can be continuously and autonomously monitored. This technique exploits the Internet of Things (IoT) paradigm to make the physical objects, participating in a process, smart. Being equipped with sensors, a computing device, and a communication interface, such smart objects can then become self-aware of their own conditions and of the process they participate in, and exchange this information with the other smart objects and the involved organizations. To allow organizations to reuse preexisting process models, a method to instruct smart objects given Business Process Model and Notation (BPMN) collaboration diagrams is also presented. The work constitutes a revised version of the PhD dissertation written by the author at the PhD School of Information Engineering of Politecnico di Milano, Italy. In 2019, the PhD dissertation won the “CAiSE PhD award”, granted to outstanding PhD theses in the field of Information Systems Engineering.

This volume constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 19th International Conference on Business Process Management, BPM 2021, held in Rome, Italy, in September 2021. The 23 full papers, one keynote paper, and 4 tutorial papers presented in this volume were carefully reviewed and selected from 92 submissions. The papers are organized in topical sections named: foundations, engineering, and management.

These two volumes constitute the proceedings of the 21st International Conference, ICSOC 2023, held Rome, Italy, during November 28–December 1, 2023. The 35 full papers and the 10 short papers included in this volume were carefully reviewed and selected from 208 submissions. The volumes focus on cutting-edge topics like artificial intelligence, machine learning, big data analytics, the Internet of Things (IoT), and emerging technologies such as quantum computing, blockchain, chatbots, and sustainable green IT solutions.

This book constitutes the contributions presented at the Blockchain Forum and the Central and Eastern Europe Forum (CEE Forum) held at the 17th International Conference on Business Process Management, BPM 2019, which took place in Vienna, Austria, in September 2019. The Blockchain Forum deals with the use of blockchain for collaborative information systems. Conceptual, technical and application-oriented contributions are pursued within the scope of this theme. The Blockchain Forum received a total of 31 submissions; 10 full and 1 short paper were accepted for publication in this book. The objective of the CEE Forum is to foster discussion for BPM academics from Central and Eastern Europe to disseminate their research, compare results and share experiences. For the CEE Forum 16 submissions were received and 6 full and 2 short papers were accepted for publication. The book also contains one invited talk in full-paper length and 6 poster papers from the CEE Forum.

This book constitutes the proceedings of the BPM Forum from the International Conference on Business Process Management, BPM 2017, held in Barcelona, Spain, September 2017. The BPM Forum hosts innovative research which has a high potential of stimulating discussions. The papers selected for the forum are expected to showcase fresh ideas from exciting and emerging topics in BPM, even if they are not yet as mature as the regular papers at the conference. The volume contains 11 full papers carefully reviewed and selected from 97 submissions. Each paper was reviewed by a team comprising of a senior PC and four regular PC members who engage in a discussion phase after the initial reviews were prepared. The authors eventually receive four review reports, and a meta-review that summarizes the reviews and the discussion. The selected papers cover topics related to process models and metrics, mining and compliance, and to other innovative ideas such as gamification, smart devices and digital innovation as far as they pertain to BPM.

This book discusses the up-and-coming blockchain technology in a structured way from the conceptual, technological, and business perspectives, thereby providing the integrated insight that is essential for truly understanding blockchain applications and their impact. While most people may know about blockchain from Bitcoin and news about its price in the financial markets, blockchain is a technology that increasingly permeates the way in which modern businesses operate. However, its dynamics and functioning remain obscure for most people. This book gives readers the tools to understand the full extent to which blockchain technology is or can be used in business. First, the book focuses on the functioning of blockchain systems, introducing basic concepts such as transactions, consensus mechanisms, and smart contracts, as well as giving a smooth introduction to the basic features of cryptography that underpin blockchain technology, e.g., digital signatures and hashing. Then, the book focuses on specific blockchain platforms (Bitcoin, Ethereum, private blockchain platforms) currently used for the implementation of cryptocurrencies and other blockchain systems. Finally, it introduces a set of tools to understand and analyze the suitability of blockchain technology in different business scenarios from the business model, and business operation perspectives. Examples and case studies of blockchain applications currently in production are discussed extensively across the book. This book targets students and educators with an interest in blockchain technology providing a one-stop shop to obtain a deep and complete insight in blockchain technology and its applicability in different business scenarios. The textbook is designed primarily for third and fourth year undergraduate students in industrial engineering, business and management, and information systems. However, it can be adopted also in the computer science majors, since it does not strictly require any specific pre-requisite knowledge. At the graduate level, this book can be used in courses for industrial engineering, information systems, and management students. Finally, the book is also of interest to practitioners, like business analysts, process analysts, and information system architects, to understand the enabling and transformative potential of blockchain in a given business scenario.

This book constitutes the proceedings of the 15th International Conference on Service-Oriented Computing, ICSOC 2017, held in malaga, Spain, in November 2017. The 33 full papers presented together with 20 short papers and 4 keynotes in this volume were carefully reviewed and selected from 179 submissions. The selected papers cover a wide variety of important topics in the area of service-oriented computing, including foundational issues on service discovery and service-systems design, business process modelling and management, economics of service-systems engineering, as well as services on the cloud, social networks, the Internet of Things (IoT), and data analytics. The chapter "Risk-based Proactive Process Adaptation" is available open access under a CC BY 4.0 license via link.springer.com.

This book constitutes the thoroughly refereed proceedings of six international workshops held in Tallinn, Estonia, in conjunction with the 30th International Conference on Advanced Information Systems Engineering, CAiSE 2018, in June 2018.
