Every year more than 30 million tonnes of bituminous mixtures are laid in the UK in the course of maintenance and improvements of the road network. However, much of the technology associated with road construction and maintenance has never been published - until now. Bituminous mixtures in road construction has been published as the definitive guide to blacktop and addresses the theoretical and practical aspects of the design, manufacture and laying of bituminous mixtures. Written by a team of leading experts, the book provides up-to-the-minute thinking in materials specification, test methods and harmonisation of standards and covers all aspects of fully flexible road construction from foundation design through to surface treatment. In one handy volume, Bituminous mixtures in road construction presents the best of British expertise and will prove to be an essential guide for all engineers working on the construction and maintenance of highways.

The purpose of this manual is to provide clear and helpful information for maintaining gravel roads. Very little technical help is available to small agencies that are responsible for managing these roads. Gravel road maintenance has traditionally been "more of an art than a science" and very few formal standards exist. This manual contains guidelines to help answer the questions that arise concerning gravel road maintenance such as: What is enough surface crown? What is too much? What causes corrugation? The information is as nontechnical as possible without sacrificing clear guidelines and instructions on how to do the job right.

The urgent need for infrastructure rehabilitation and maintenance has led to a rise in the levels of research into bituminous materials. Breakthroughs in sustainable and environmentally friendly bituminous materials are certain to have a significant impact on national economies and energy sustainability. This book will provide a comprehensive review on recent advances in research and technological developments in bituminous materials. Opening with an introductory chapter on asphalt materials and a section on the perspective of bituminous binder specifications, Part One covers the physiochemical characterisation and analysis of asphalt materials. Part Two reviews the range of distress (damage) mechanisms in asphalt materials, with chapters covering cracking, deformation, fatigue cracking and healing of asphalt mixtures, as well as moisture damage and the multiscale oxidative aging modelling approach for asphalt concrete. The final section of this book investigates alternative asphalt materials. Chapters within this section review such aspects as alternative binders for asphalt pavements such as bio binders and RAP, paving with asphalt emulsions and aggregate grading optimization. Provides an insight into advances and techniques for bituminous materials Comprehensively reviews the physicochemical characteristics of bituminous materials Investigate asphalt materials on the nano-scale, including how RAP/RAS materials can be recycled and how asphalt materials can self-heal and rejuvenator selection

This is the first ever text-cum-reference book in India on “Bituminous Road Construction”. It includes references to the codes and specifications of the Indian Roads Congress and the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), besides the international standards such as ASTM and AASHTO. This book provides a thorough knowledge of bituminous road construction such as bitumen; aggregate; mix design; special mixes such as stone matrix asphalt and warm mix asphalt; structural design of flexible pavements; asphalt production and construction; distresses in asphalt pavements; maintenance and rehabilitation of asphalt pavements including recycling; and interesting investigations of premature failure of asphalt pavements across the world. It includes a large number of photographs for easy comprehension of the subject matter. This book has been designed to serve as a text for the undergraduate and postgraduate students of Civil Engineering for the courses on: Highway Materials including Testing Laboratory; Asphalt Mix Design; Highway Construction and Maintenance; Highway Pavement Failures; and Design of Flexible Pavements. Cutting-edge technology on bituminous road constructions, included in the book, helps M.Tech and Ph.D. students in conducting research in this field. Since over 95% of highways have bituminous surface, this book is also an ideal reference for thousands of practicing highway engineers who are engaged in the most ambitious highway construction programme ever in India. Highlights of the Second Edition: • Incorporates cutting-edge technology on the topics covered • Includes new sections on bitumen chemistry; durability of bitumen; Balanced Mix Design (BMD); asphalt mix characterization; perpetual pavements; QC/QA in India; and rehabilitation of distressed concrete pavements with bituminous overlays; and life cycle costs of bituminous versus concrete pavements. TARGET AUDIENCE • B.Tech Civil Engineering • M.Tech Highway Education • Practicing Highway Engineer

This synthesis on the use of warranties in road construction will be of interest to administrators, engineers, designers, and contractors involved with highway design and construction and the procurement process for these services. Experiences with use of warranties in Europe and the United States are cited and the potential impacts, benefits, and concerns of using warranties in the United States are identified. Actions needed to facilitate the use of warranties for highway projects in the United States are also discussed. The use of warranties in road construction is relatively widespread in the European highway industry compared to practice in the United States, where use has been limited. This report of the Transportation Research Board describes the various methods used in Europe for highway industry warranties and identifies the issues that need to be addressed before construction warranties can be translated to U.S. practice. Recent congressional proposals call for the use of warranties to be allowed on federal-aid highway projects. This has caused varied reactions from the parties involved in the design and construction of highways, resulting in a General Accounting Office study on methods for improving the quality of federal-aid highways, including the use of warranties. Ultimately, the owner will have to decide whether to use warranties in highway construction projects. Some of the potential benefits and concerns of using warranties, plus needed actions for successful implementation are presented in this synthesis, which is considered a snapshot of the issues at the time of publication.
