Assessment Of Species Diversity In The Atlantic Maritime Ecozone

This volume includes thirteen research articles focused primarily on Canadian Coleoptera. Several taxonomic and biodiversity studies examine groups within the Staphylinidae, Cerambycidae, Gyrinidae, and Haliplidae, describing new species, presenting keys to identification, mapping distributions, and reporting new provincial and national records. Other studies direct their attention to saproxylic beetles as indicators of forest disturbance, and to the beetle fauna of Rhode Island and the larger zoogeographic utility of distributional checklists. An introductory essay discusses a variety of challenges to biodiversity and biosystematics research worldwide. The contents of present volume represent stepping-stones of biodiversity research ? a discipline vital to the future of life on the planet. The book is addressed to coleopterists, taxonomists, ecologists, biogeographers and conservationists.

New taxonomic, distribution and habitat data are presented for Canadian species in various families of Coleoptera. Distributional records are presented mostly from New Brunswick but also Quebec, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island. For New Brunswick, 320 new provincial records, 6 new records for Canada, and 22 new records of adventive species are provided. For Quebec, 1 new provincial record is provided; for Nova Scotia, 11 new provincial records are provided; and for Prince Edward Island, 2 new provincial records are provided. Maps of all new distribution records and significant new biological information are provided for all species. This volume on Maritime provinces beetle biodiversity contributes new and important baseline data, and significantly updates the known Coleoptera faunas of New Brunswick, Quebec, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, and Canada.

Temperate rainforests are biogeographically unique. Compared to their tropical counterparts, temperate rainforests are rarer and are found disproportionately along coastlines. Because most temperate rainforests are marked by the intersection of marine, terrestrial, and freshwater systems, these rich ecotones are among the most productive regions on Earth. Globally, temperate rainforests store vast amounts of carbon, provide habitat for scores of rare and endemic species with ancient affinities, and sustain complex food-web dynamics.
