At The Intersection Of Indigenous And Traditional Knowledge And Technology Design

There is intensified interest in designing information and communication technologies (ICTs) that respond to ways of doing, knowing, and saying that differ from those that dominate in producing ICTs and, in particular, to ‘traditional’ or ‘indigenous’ knowledges. ICT endeavours for indigenous or traditional knowledges (ITK) vary. Some aim to extend ITK digitally and others use ICTs to improve the economic and/or political situation of marginalised groups. This book presents themes that arise in designing to respond to ITK in different cultural, social, physical, and historical contexts.

This book contains a series of revised papers selected from 7 workshops organized by 18th IFIP TC 13 International Conference on Human-Computer Interaction, INTERACT 2021, which was held in September 2021 in Bari, Italy. The 15 papers included in this volume were carefully reviewed and selected from 30 submissions. They show the design of interactive technologies addressing one or more United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals, to deal with evolving contexts of use in today’s and future application domains and its influence on human-centered socio-technical system design and devel-opment practice, share educational resources and approaches to support the process of teaching and learning HCI Engineering (HCI-E), share educational resources and approaches to support the process of teaching and learning HCI Engineering (HCI-E), and address and discuss geopolitical issues in Human-Computer Interaction as a field of knowledge and practice. This book explores the digitization of culture as a means of experiencing and understanding cultural heritage in Namibia and from international perspectives. This volume constitutes the refereed post-conference proceedings of the 10th IFIP WG 13.8 International Conference on Culture, Technology, and Communication, CaTaC 2016, held in London, UK, in June 2016. For many millennia, Indigenous Australians have been engineering the landscape using sophisticated technological and philosophical knowledge systems in a deliberate response to changing social and environmental circumstances. These knowledge systems integrate profound understanding of country and bring together knowledge of the topography and geology of the landscape, its natural cycles and ecological systems, its hydrological systems and natural resources including fauna and flora. This enables people to manage resources sustainably and reliably, and testifies to a developed, contextualised knowledge system and to a society with agency and the capability to maintain and refine accumulated knowledge and material processes. This book is a recognition and acknowledgement of the ingenuity of Indigenous engineering which is grounded in philosophical principles, values and practices that emphasise sustainability, reciprocity, respect, and diversity, and often presents a much-needed challenge to a Western engineering worldview. Each chapter is written by a team of authors combining Indigenous knowledge skills and academic expertise, providing examples of collaboration at the intersection of Western and Indigenous engineering principles, sharing old and new knowledges and skills. These varied approaches demonstrate ways to integrate Indigenous knowledges into the curricula for Australian engineering degrees, in line with the Australian Council of Engineering Deans’ Position Statement on Embedding Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives into the engineering curriculum first published in 2017.
