Focusing on mobility, religion, and belonging, the volume contributes to transatlantic anthropology and history by bringing together religion, cultural heritage and placemaking in the Atlantic world. The entanglements of these domains are ethnographically scrutinized to perceive the connections and disconnections of specific places which, despite a common history, are today very different in terms of secular regimes and the presence of religion in the public sphere. Ideally suited to a variety of scholars and students in different fields, Atlantic Perspectives will lead to new debates and conversations throughout the fields of anthropology, religion and history.

This book examines the current phase of world order transition in the Atlantic area, focusing on Europe and Northern America, Asia, and Africa. In particular, it describes four processes of world order transition, namely the decreasing American leadership, the rising power of China, the receding effectiveness of economy and security world policies, and the continued but inadequate operation of the world policy-making institutions. Part one of the book presents perspectives on world order transition developed by political science schools, i.e. the world hegemony and the power transition school, and by the experts of complexity theory, a newcomer in social sciences. These theories are best suited to explain the order transition and to supply consistent, complementary data and insights on the juncture of the four processes pushing for the creation of the new world order. Part two looks into the impact of order transition on the Atlantic area. The authors focus on the existing tensions and the potentials for change that affect the long-time relations between the USA, the European countries, and Canada. At the same time, the interference of China into the politics and economy of Europe is analyzed, in particular through a case study of the relations between China and the Baltic states.

Seeing through the eyes of others brings new perspective on the place we call home. In Land of Many Shores, writers share their essays about life in Newfoundland and Labrador from often-neglected viewpoints. In this collection, Indigenous people, cultural minorities, LGBTQ+, people living with mental or physical disabilities and other undervalued and hidden voices are coming to the forefront, with personal, poignant, celebratory and critical visions of the land we live on. From workers in the sex industry to non-Christian faithful, from the descendants of settlers from other lands to the Indigenous people of this land, the variety of experience against the backdrop of Newfoundland and Labrador provides food for thought--and celebration of diversity.

The book highlights facets of people's experiences since the 19th century with Atlantic space and the design of their stay on board ships. The contributions range from the perspective of pleasure-seeking tourists, who used ships as a temporary, luxurious homes to the perspective of military personnel, who perceived the Atlantic Passage as a transition between homeland security and potentially dangerous professional operations - the risks of sea voyages even on technically sophisticated ocean liners, whose interiors and services often include grand hotels in the metropolises of the late 19th and 20th century, were discreetly ignored by the passengers. The charm of the Atlantic and the ship, unthinkable in earlier times, should not be decimated in any way.

The first encyclopedic reference to Atlantic history Between the fifteenth and nineteenth centuries, the connections among Africa, the Americas, and Europe transformed world history—through maritime exploration, commercial engagements, human migrations and settlements, political realignments and upheavals, cultural exchanges, and more. This book, the first encyclopedic reference work on Atlantic history, takes an integrated, multicontinental approach that emphasizes the dynamics of change and the perspectives and motivations of the peoples who made it happen. The entries—all specially commissioned for this volume from an international team of leading scholars—synthesize the latest scholarship on central themes, including economics, migration, politics, war, technologies and science, the physical environment, and culture. Part one features five major essays that trace the changes distinctive to each chronological phase of Atlantic history. Part two includes more than 125 entries on key topics, from the seemingly familiar viewed in unfamiliar and provocative ways (the Seven Years' War, trading companies) to less conventional subjects (family networks, canon law, utopias).
