The New Contract which came into force on April 1st 1990 includes proposals for the provision of minor surgery services by the General Practitioner. The aim of this book is to assist those doctors undertaking minor surgery in their Practices. It is intended to present a practical, clear and concise text. This is accompanied by easy to follow illustrations. The contents of the book are governed by two considerations. Firstly, it covers only those procedures which are safe for the patient. Secondly, it only includes minor surgery which it is possible for the ordinary General Practitioner in a busy practice to undertake. Vll Chapter One The Advantages of Minor Surgery in General Practice Minor Surgery:- Despite this descriptive term, no surgery can be considered "minor" no matter where it is carried out! It requires a knowledge of anatomy and basic surgical principles. There must be an understanding of the procedures and technical skills required. Careful planning is needed at all stages. Arrangements must also be made to deal with any complications and disasters which may occur. Having stated these provisos, however, surgical procedures can and should be an important part of general practice within the British National Health Service (NHS). There are many advantages to be gained, both for patient and doctor, when minor surgery is undertaken by the general practitioner.

The latest edition of Minor Surgery carries on the highly respected tradition of the well known earlier editions in providing a superbly illustrated step-by-step guide to minor surgery. As previously, the book begins by placing minor surgery into context with a description of the setting up, equipping and running of a minor operations facility in a primary health care setting. Methods of anaesthesia follow. The text then goes on to describe over 40 surgical procedures in step-by-step detail, accompanied by colour photographs and line drawings. The authority and clarity of the text owe much to the author's own experience of over 20,000 minor operations. All sections have been revised, some reflect improved techniques and others take into account the wishes of those doctors who undertake more complex minor surgical procedures. The latter are incorporated into the Advanced Minor Surgery section, which includes the technique of radio-surgery. A new chapter on the role of the Practice Nurse/Operating Theatre Assistant is included, acknowledging the vital role they play. Another important new chapter features biopsy techniques, allowing for prompt diagnosis of skin cancer. As a new addition, specialists in their field have been invited to write a chapter giving information on how to improve the results of minor surgery. This Specialist Minor Surgery Section contains contributions from a consultant plastic surgeon, consultant ophthalmologist and dental surgeon.
