The theory of automorphic forms is playing increasingly important roles in several branches of mathematics, even in physics, and is almost ubiquitous in number theory. This book introduces the reader to the subject and in particular to elliptic modular forms with emphasis on their number-theoretical aspects. After two chapters geared toward elementary levels, there follows a detailed treatment of the theory of Hecke operators, which associate zeta functions to modular forms. At a more advanced level, complex multiplication of elliptic curves and abelian varieties is discussed. The main question is the construction of abelian extensions of certain algebraic number fields, which is traditionally called "Hilbert's twelfth problem." Another advanced topic is the determination of the zeta function of an algebraic curve uniformized by modular functions, which supplies an indispensable background for the recent proof of Fermat's last theorem by Wiles.

Much has been written on the theory of discontinuous groups and automorphic functions since 1880, when the subject received its first formulation. The purpose of this book is to bring together in one place both the classical and modern aspects of the theory, and to present them clearly and in a modern language and notation. The emphasis in this book is on the fundamental parts of the subject. The book is directed to three classes of readers: graduate students approaching the subject for the first time, mature mathematicians who wish to gain some knowledge and understanding of automorphic function theory, and experts.

This book presents a treatment of the theory of $L$-functions developed by means of the theory of Eisenstein series and their Fourier coefficients, a theory which is usually referred to as the Langlands-Shahidi method. The information gathered from this method, when combined with the converse theorems of Cogdell and Piatetski-Shapiro, has been quite sufficient in establishing a number of new cases of Langlands functoriality conjecture; at present, some of these cases cannot be obtained by any other method. These results have led to far-reaching new estimates for Hecke eigenvalues of Maass forms, as well as definitive solutions to certain problems in analytic and algebraic number theory. This book gives a detailed treatment of important parts of this theory, including a rather complete proof of Casselman-Shalika's formula for unramified Whittaker functions as well as a general treatment of the theory of intertwining operators. It also covers in some detail the global aspects of the method as well as some of its applications to group representations and harmonic analysis. This book is addressed to graduate students and researchers who are interested in the Langlands program in automorphic forms and its connections with number theory.

Knopp's engaging book presents an introduction to modular functions in number theory by concentrating on two modular functions, $\eta(\tau)$ and $\vartheta(\tau)$, and their applications to two number-theoretic functions, $p(n)$ and $r_s(n)$. They are well chosen, as at the heart of these particular applications to the treatment of these specific number-theoretic functions lies the general theory of automorphic functions, a theory of far-reaching significance with important connections to a great many fields of mathematics. The book is essentially self-contained, assuming only a good first-year course in analysis. The excellent exposition presents the beautiful interplay between modular forms and number theory, making the book an excellent introduction to analytic number theory for a beginning graduate student. "Six Short Chapters on Automorphic Forms and L-functions" treats the period conjectures of Shimura and the moment conjecture. These conjectures are of central importance in contemporary number theory, but have hitherto remained little discussed in expository form. The book is divided into six short and relatively independent chapters, each with its own theme, and presents a motivated and lively account of the main topics, providing professionals an overall view of the conjectures and providing researchers intending to specialize in the area a guide to the relevant literature. Ze-Li Dou and Qiao Zhang are both associate professors of Mathematics at Texas Christian University, USA.
