Coming in summer 2022: The new book from the award-winning and No. 1 Sunday Times bestselling author of THE FIVE: THE WOMEN WHO WERE KILLED BY JACK THE RIPPER In 1910, the name Dr Hawley Harvey Crippen entered legend. The remains of his wife, the music hall performer, Belle Elmore were discovered in his London cellar, while he and his secretary Ethel Le Neve were found masquerading as father and son on a ship bound for Canada. Meanwhile, in New York, the Irish family of Charlotte Bell, Crippen’s first wife were investigating the mysterious circumstances of her death, nearly 20 years earlier. For over a century, Belle Elmore’s murder has been retold as a tale about a cold-blooded killer and the heroic men who brought him to justice, however the real story is one that hasn’t been heard. It is told by the ranks of women who dominated the case, not only the larger-than-life Belle, the rebellious and ambitious Ethel, and the courageous Charlotte, but an army of Edwardian actresses, circus performers, singers, horse trainers, landladies, secretaries, bookkeepers and medical professionals whose version of events has been drowned out by those of law enforcement and even by the murderer himself. Their perspectives paint a chilling picture of an Edwardian world, not so entirely distant from our own.

This book presents a feminist mapping of the articulation and suppression of female desire in Hindi films, which comprise one of modern India’s most popular cultural narratives. It explores the lineament of evil and the corresponding closure of chastisement or domesticity that appear as necessary conditions for the representation of subversive female desire. The term ‘bad’ is used heuristically, and not as a moral or essential category, to examine some of the iconic disruptive women of Hindi cinema and to uncover the nexus between patriarchy and other hierarchies, such as class, caste and religion in these representations. The twenty-one essays examine the politics of female desire/s from the 1930s to the present day - both through in-depth analyses of single films and by tracing the typologies in multiple films. The essays are divided into five sections indicating the various gendered desires and rebellions that patriarchal society seeks to police, silence and domesticate.

"The treatment of the female, feminine, femininity, femaleness has never been constant neither in my country nor anywhere else. The 'female' is beyond gender, bodily limits and even beyond living and nonliving.Otherwise, who knew one day acid and pepper would become 'female' weapons used against and by women respectively. I tried to find out a common thread that binds together all 'women' across the world. Couldn't find any...Do let me know if you have/could.Also remember Roland Barthes once said, ""The birth of the reader must be required by the death of the author."" Well,I would say,it would be kinder if you contemplate, interpret each poem as your own but read and criticize them as my work. 'LEGENDS OF BAD WOMEN' is a collection of one hundred poems, six lines each. Most of them are not the immediate continuation of the previous one with a very few exceptions. Some of the poems are the dedications to notable personalities from history, legends, mythology, "

The women who broke the rules, creating their own legacy of how to live and sing the blues. An exciting lineage of women singers—originating with Ma Rainey and her protégée Bessie Smith—shaped the blues, launching it as a powerful, expressive vehicle of emotional liberation. Along with their successors Billie Holiday, Etta James, Aretha Franklin, Tina Turner, and Janis Joplin, they injected a dose of reality into the often trivial world of popular song, bringing their message of higher expectations and broader horizons to their audiences. These women passed their image, their rhythms, and their toughness on to the next generation of blues women, which has its contemporary incarnation in singers like Bonnie Raitt and Lucinda Williams (with whom the author has done an in-depth interview). Buzzy Jackson combines biography, an appreciation of music, and a sweeping view of American history to illuminate the pivotal role of blues women in a powerful musical tradition. Musician Thomas Dorsey said, "The blues is a good woman feeling bad." But these women show by their style that he had it backward: The blues is a bad woman feeling good.
