Batik is one of the most prominent expressions of the cultural identity of the Malay world. This book traces the origins and development of the motifs and patterns used in the design of batik.

Rich in tradition and history, the art of batik has been a deeply integrated facet of Chinese folk art for over 2,000 years. Using molten beeswax, skilled artisans paint patterns onto white cloth, which is then dipped into indigo dye. When the wax is removed with boiling water, unique designs of great harmony and beauty remain. The themes depicted in batik decoration have a strong native flavor, and are distinctive of the Chinese provinces and districts where they were created. In Huangping, mountains, trees, and birds are represented. In the Miao district, the concentration is on flowers and butterflies, while in the Yunnan Province, designs of peacocks, monkeys, and elephants abound. The word ’batik’ is possibly of Malay origin from the word ’tik’ meaning ’to drip’ or ’to drop.’ The term is applied to a resist dye technique invented independently in locations as diverse as Ancient Egypt, Japan and Turkestan. Batik is a remarkably flexible textile technique and is suited to small-scale methods of production, but demand from the fashion and tourism industries is increasing. This volume brings together the experiences and concerns of the international community of batik producers. It gives voice to their suggestions for ensuring that the producers of this traditional craft are integrated into its increasingly global production rather than excluded from it. Building on the work of batik designers and producers the book discusses the emergence of a global craft consciousness. Batik producers report on innovative measures taken both individually and collectively to hold their market position while commercial producers frequently annex and mass-produce traditional batik design. The book concludes with a discussion of marketing and production innovations and tourism which enable the producers of batik to maintain the integrity of their designs whilst harnessing the benefits of new commercial forms.

This book is the proceeding of the International Conference Jakarta International on Multidisciplinary Studies towards Creative Industries (JICOMS 2022) that was successfully held on 16 November 2022 using an hybrid platform. The invited talk was presented Prof. Daniel Punday from Mississipi State University, USA; Prof. Yuh Wen Chen from Da-Yeh University, Taiwan; Ruanni Tupas, Ph.D from University College London, UK and Indra Kesuma Nasution, P.hD from ANC Japan Co, LTd Japan). This conference will give an excellent discussion and a future insight for developing our community. Taking Collaboration of Cross-Disciplinary Research to Develop Creative Industries as its theme, the forum welcomes academia, professionals, researchers, practitioners, students, and civil society organization representatives to share ideas and current studies in the fields of sciences and social sciences. By this improvement we can increase our economic growth to compete in global arena which starts moving to society 5.0.
