Of the many commentators of Napoleon and his campaigns, few if any have as much ground to claim to have understood the Emperor’s intentions as well as Jomini, who had served under him for over a decade. In this account of the Waterloo campaign, Jomini dissects the actions of all the commanders and their decisions as the action moves toward the actual battle on the 18th. As a Swiss, he avoids much of the bias of the French historical accounts (and some books since) written in the aftermath of the defeat, by evaluating Blücher, Wellington and Napoleon’s decisions critically. He was pushed out of the Grande Armée into the arms of the Russian service in 1813, becoming aide-de-camp to the Tzar. He was famous for his copious output of works on the military theory and strategy employed during the French Revolution, the Napoleonic Wars, and even those of Frederick the Great. Houssaye’s history of the 1815 campaign stands out as perhaps the most complete and least biased French account of the campaign that culminated in the downfall of Napoleon. Filled with detail from numerous French sources and written in a light style, it provides a complete look at the campaign whilst keeping the narrative to a reasonable length. There is also an occasional flash of wit - usually missing from French accounts, substituted instead with accusation and counter accusation - which makes the book a real joy to read. For example, speaking of Grouchy on the morning of the 18th “Grouchy was eating some strawberries (to eat strawberries is not, moreover, a hanging matter, even on a morning of battle),...” Henry Houssaye, an esteemed member of the French Institute, wrote a number of works on the Napoleonic period (mainly of the later years of Napoleon), amongst them plays and ancient history. Captain James Kennedy, as he then was, served with distinction throughout the Peninsula War under both Sir John Moore and the Duke of Wellington as a regimental officer, on the staff, and as aide-de-camp of “Black Bob” Craufurd of the famed Light Division. During the Waterloo campaign, he was on the staff of the Third Division and was heavily involved in the fighting. After many further years of service in the British Army, he sat down to record his own recollections of the events that ended Napoleon’s brief second reign as Emperor of France. His wealth of experience of war and campaigning provided him with an admirable viewpoint to discuss the actual detail of the conflict of June 1815; in this, he gave free reign to what he knew to be true and to what he had seen of the fighting. General Kennedy did not, as some of his contemporaries in the British Army did, believe that the Duke of Wellington’s performance was flawless; his reasoned, intricate and balanced narrative is both instructive and entertaining. John Codman Ropes was not only a lawyer of the first order, but also a military history of great note. Intimately involved in supporting troops from his native Massachusetts in the American Civil War (he could not serve directly himself due to a childhood illness), he later diligently collected information on this conflict to produce the excellent “The Army under Pope” and the unfinished “Story of the Civil War”. He was the driving force of the Military Historical Society of Massachusetts, whose members included large numbers of service men, notably General Hancock. From his wealth of expertise and knowledge, he produced two volumes on the Napoleonic period as well, both of which have gone on to become standard works. Ropes’ “Campaign of Waterloo” is a classic of its kind, acclaimed as unbiased, brilliant and eminently readable. The format of the book is ideally suited to the accumulated eye-witness testimony that has created difficulty in gaining a clear view of the events that defined an epoch. With each chapter, the Author gives a lucid narrative of the events before weighing the evidence that led him to his conclusions in a notes section at the end, all the while avoiding the tangle often found between the narrative and references. Almost 200 years after the battles were fought, the Waterloo Campaign of 1815 still remains a contentious issue. It was to be Napoleon’s last charge at the head of his formidable armies that had marched into nearly every capital in Europe over the past 10 years. How could it be that he would be defeated by a rag-tag Anglo-Dutch army under the Duke of Wellington and the more heterogeneous but inexperienced Prussian army? Some might say Napoleon’s orders were miscommunicated, misunderstood or even ignored; others would say that the formerly all-powerful Emperor’s powers were on the wane and he was eventually outmanoeuvred by his enemies. Historians have ranged up on either side of the debate for decades, and cast their opinions into the mix with some verve and often much partisan feeling. From such muddied water, Lt.-Col Pratt provides a clear account of the campaign, sifting through the evidence with an expert military eye; dealing with the varied opinions of previous historians and the evidence of all the belligerent powers. Pratt served as in the officer in the Royal Engineers for many years, seeing much service throughout the British Empire, during which time he authored and co-authored a number of books, principally on military law, and strategy. The momentous fruits of the campaign have led to the decisions and actions of the belligerents and their armies to be argued back and forth ever since. Colonel Chesney’s work is amongst a handful of books that are considered to be “standard” as histories of the campaign that have been translated into French and German. It is fitting that the work of such a learned soldier, who is also a late professor of Military Art and History at the Staff College in Camberley, should be such a balanced and detailed account of the campaign.
