This book carries the Proceedings of the European Association for Behavioural and Cognitive Therapy conference held in Venice in September 1997 and is dedicated to the memory of Hans Eysenck. The EACBT conference provides a rare opportunity for a wide range of clinicians and researchers from all over Europe and the USSR to come together, resulting in a highly topical and valuable range of scientific presentations. The Proceedings comprises over twenty papers addressing key subjects in terms of behavioural and cognitive therapy including panic, affective disorders, paraphilia, schizophrenia, PTSD, obsession and other psychological disorders. Of particular interest are chapters on the use of cognitive behaviour therapy versus supportive therapy in social phobia (Cottraux), the psychological treatment of paraphilias (De Silva), the theory and treatment of PTSD (Foa), the use of Diagnostic Profiling System in treatment planning (Freeman) and a cognitive theory of obsession (Rachman).

Specialized Cognitive Behavior Therapy for Obsessive Compulsive Disorder is an expert clinician guide for administration of evidence-based specialized cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) for obsessive compulsive disorder and its subtypes. This book focuses on strategies to identify and resolve complex and varied reasons for resistance to CBT and to optimize symptom remission, generalize improvement, and forestall relapse during treatment for OCD. The interventions discussed build upon and elaborate the clinical and research work of other OCD experts, clinicians and researchers in the field of cognitive therapy, and are based on the author’s own research and clinical experience as an internationally known expert treating thousands of OCD patients. Criteria are outlined for symptom recovery and for treatment resistance in the context of optimal evidence-based specialized CBT delivery. Featuring treatment models and illustrative case studies, this book is a necessary addition to the library of mental health professionals who work with patients suffering from OCD.

Despite the fact that methods of exposure therapy have proven to be highly effective in various empirical studies, they are still underused and sometimes subject to controversial discussion. There have been significant developments: In recent years, methods of exposure therapy have been applied in various areas of therapy, including body dysmorphic disorder and hypochondriasis. Exposure techniques also play an important role in the so called “third wave therapies” (Acceptance & Commitment Therapy, Dialectical Behavior Therapy). And there is more recently a revival of exposure in panic and agoraphobia and GAD. On the other hand, a large number of scientific articles discuss the practical applications (ethical aspects, amount of exposure) and the theoretical foundations (habituation) of exposure therapy. In order to provide an overview of the current debate and to point out the latest developments in the area of exposure therapy, we have decided to present the current state of discussion (most contributors are scientist-practitioners) to an interested professional audience.

This book reasserts the importance of case formulation as the first step in implementing effective cognitive behavioral therapies (CBT), centering it as the main operative tool of CBT approaches by which the therapist handles the whole psychotherapeutic process. Chapters discuss specific CBT interventions and components of the treatment, aspecific factors including therapeutic alliance and relationship, and theoretical and historical background of CBT practices. In addition, the book assumes that in CBTs the case formulation is a procedure which is continuously shared and reevaluated between patient and therapist throughout the course of treatment. This aspect is increasingly becoming the distinguishing feature of CBT approaches as it embodies CBT's basic tenets and implies full confidence in patients’ conscious agreement, transparent cooperation and explicit commitment with CBT’s model of clinical change.
