Excerpt from Bibliography of Foreign Language Newspapers and Periodicals Published in Chicago In listing the publications the attempt was made to include the following information: title, translation of title, frequency of issue, type of publication (newspaper or periodical), editorial policy, date of establishment, date of expiration, name of editor, name and address of publisher, and library location symbols designating holdings. Unfortunately it was not possible in every case to secure all of the above data for each item listed. The sources used in compiling this bibliography were many. All available newspaper and periodical directories, checklists, catalogs and guides were combed. Almanacs, yearbooks, and advertisers and city directories were thoroughly searched. Library lists and special bibliographies, including the Union List of Serials and Union List of Newspapers, were minutely examined. Pertinent material was gleaned from numerous histories of foreign language groups in Chicago and in the United States. Finally the private archives of various editors and publishers were checked for additional information. A few points concerning the style of listing require amplification. The titles are entered in the Latin alphabet and are arranged alphabetically, definite and indefinite articles excluded, by language. Where transliteration was necessary, it was performed in accordance with standard practices. For the benefit of the general user the titles are translated; in some cases this was done rather freely. It was not always easy to determine whether a given publication should be classed as a newspaper or periodical. The rule of thumb generally applied here was the frequency of issue and the percentage of space devoted to current news. The dates of establishment and expiration of a publication cover only its life in Chicago. In listing the name of the editor, the intention was to indicate the last person to hold that position, but in many cases this was not possible. While publications printed wholly in English are not included, those published partly in English and partly in a foreign tongue appear in this volume. Lastly, a few ephemeral items may have been listed which should possibly have been excluded. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This ambitious undertaking is designed to acquaint students, teachers, and researchers with reference sources in any branch of English studies, which Marcuse defines as "all those subjects and lines of critical and scholarly inquiry presently pursued by members of university departments of English language and literature.'' Within each of 24 major sections, Marcuse lists and annotates bibliographies, guides, reviews of research, encyclopedias, dictionaries, journals, and reference histories. The annotations and various indexes are models of clarity and usefulness, and cross references are liberally supplied where appropriate. Although cost-conscious librarians will probably consider the several other excellent literary bibliographies in print, such as James L. Harner's Literary Research Guide (Modern Language Assn. of America, 1989), larger academic libraries will want Marcuse's volume.-- Jack Bales, Mary Washington Coll. This reference book is designed as a road map for researchers who need to find specific information about American mass communication as expeditiously as possible. Taking a topical approach, it integrates publications and organizations into subject-focused chapters for easy user reference. The editors define mass communication to include print journalism and electronic media and the processes by which they communicate messages to their audiences. Included are newspaper, magazine, radio, television, cable, and newer electronic media industries. Within that definition, this volume offers an indexed inventory of more than 1,400 resources on most aspects of American mass communication history, technology, economics, content, audience research, policy, and regulation. The material featured represents the carefully considered judgment of three experts -- two of them librarians -- plus four contributors from different industry venues. The primary focus is on the domestic American print and electronic media industries. Although there is no claim to a complete census of all materials on print journalism and electronic media -- what is available is now too vast for any single guide -- the most important and useful items are here. The emphasis is on material published since 1980, though useful older resources are included as well. Each chapter is designed to stand alone, providing the most important and useful resources of a primary nature -- organizations and documents as well as secondary books and reports. In addition, online resources and internet citations are included where possible.
