This paper examines the lived experiences of six Black anti-racist educators as they engage in dialogues on race in classrooms within a public school district where the students and teachers are predominately white. The Black teacher is often in the position of being an anti-racist text simply by their bodily presence within the school. Their existence in the space of whiteness at once extends the definition of 'teacher' to include Black bodies, while it opens possibilities of who can have knowledge, and who can have authority. Using an anti-colonial lens and drawing on principles of Black feminist epistemology, this project aims to let the lived experience of Black educators serve as the source of knowledge. It examines some of the challenges and supports which Black educators encounter in their practice of anti-racist pedagogy, and concludes by offering suggestions for Black educators, school districts and teacher education programs.

Spanning three centuries, this book demonstrates a variety of archival practices to tell more expansive stories about Black women. It examines the life writing, records, and ephemera of Black women such as political reformer Sydna E. R. Francis, educators Edmonia Highgate and Lucy F. Simms, travel writer Nancy Prince, poet June Jordan, novelist Jesmyn Ward, and self-liberator Matilda Hawkins Tyler, enslaved by her own Jesuit church at St. Louis University. The contributors use oral histories, data visualization, and biographical documents and narratives to map these and countless anonymized stories across geographic locations. Tracking the voluntary and forced movement of Black women alongside the places and spaces they inhabit gives us richer, more contextualized histories. The authors probe and answer how these women moved through and beyond systemic barriers and physical dangers while placing themselves at the center of change. The stories crystalize the joys, horrors, quotidian experiences, and endurance of marginalized lives. Each chapter illustrates ways to build archival and theoretical spaces that interrogate the many ways that Black women have navigated formidable and dangerous lands. This interdisciplinary volume will be of interest to students and researchers of comparative literature, gender studies, and Black studies. The chapters in this book were originally published as a special issue of a/b: Auto/Biography Studies.

Teacher identity is shaped by recognition or its absence, often by misrecognition of others. Recognition as a teacher, or the strong and complex identification with one’s professional culture and community, is necessary for a positive sense of self. Increasingly, teachers are entering educational settings where difference connotes not equal, better/worse, or having more/less power over resources. Differences between discourses of identity are braided at many points with a discourse of racism, both interpersonal and structural. Teacher Identity and the Struggle for Recognition examines the nature of identity and recognition as social, cultural, and political constructs. In particular, the contributing authors to the book present discussions of the professional work necessary in teacher preparation programs concerned with preparing teachers for the complexities of teaching in schools that mirror an increasingly diverse society.
