Magic runs deep. Blood runs deeper. Vaelon Stone is ten years old when he's chosen by an ancient spirit to be imbued with supernatural gifts. After eating some trillyrium berries, he finds that he has healing abilities and can generate plasma through his hands. Having successfully saved his village from being obliterated by a meteorite, he is transported from Mysteria, his homeland, to modern-day Earth, along with the berries. Eight years later, after being assimilated into Western society, Vaelon learns of four others like him, one being his best friend Zack. Soon, they track down the three remaining supernaturals: Elisabeth, a sarcastic beauty with super strength, speed, and the ability to turn invisible, Lauren, a girl with the ability to shape and conjure metal, and Nat, a shapeshifter who can transform herself and those around her. But once the newly named Trillyriums come together, they discover they have been marked by Amarina Violette, a centuries' old psychic, seeking the Trillyriums' blood to cast a plague of death in her homeland—Mysteria, the very place Vaelon is from. Will the quintet, bound together by their supernatural blood, withstand being pushed to their limits to defend the people of Mysteria, or will Amarina break them and force the country to crumble under her wrath?

One of the most popular novelists of the twentieth century, winner of a Pulitzer and Nobel Prize for Literature and an active social and political campaigner, particularly in the field of women's issues and Asian-American relations, Pearl Buck has, until now, remained 'hidden in public view'. Best known, perhaps, as the prolific author of The Good Earth, Buck led a career which extended well beyond her eighty works of fiction and non-fiction and deep into the public sphere. In this critically acclaimed biography, Peter Conn retrieves Pearl Buck from the footnotes of literary and cultural history and reinstates her as a figure of compelling and uncommon significance in twentieth-century literary, cultural and political history.

The ocean is uncontrollable and dangerous. But to the sirens who swim the warm island waters, it’s a home more than worth protecting from the humans and their steam-propelled ships. Between their hypnotic voices and the strength of their powerful tails, sirens have little to fear. That is, until the ruthless pirate captain, Kian, creates a device to cancel out their songs. Perle was the first siren captured—but the only one Kian still keeps prisoner. Song muted and tail paralyzed, Perle’s hope for escape finally rekindles as another pirating vessel seizes Kian’s ship. This new captain seems different, with his brilliant smile and his promises that Kian will never again be Perle’s master. But he’s still a human, and a captor in his own way. The compassion he and his rag-tag human family show can’t be sincere… or can it? Soon it becomes clear that Kian will hunt Perle relentlessly, taking down any siren in her path. As the tides turn, Perle must decide whether to run from Kian forever, or ride the forming wave into battle, hoping these newfound human companions will fight with them.

The CO2 laser beam was introduced in oral laser surgery in 1980, and it revolutionized the field. Its effects on oral soft tissues offer many advantages: bloodless surgery, decontamination of the surgical site by heat generated, no need for suturing healthy patients, simplicity of use, and perfect control of the removed tissues. In addition, using the CO2 laser beam improves the tissue quality of the healed area due to collagen secretion induced by the tissular beam action, and has a bio-modulation effect on irradiated tissues. This atlas will examine and discuss some procedures common in different fields of current oral surgery. First, we present an introduction to laser physics, as well as guidelines for proper clinical protocol. Then, we examine how the laser beam can be useful to practitioners in different specialties, such as periodontics, endodontics, orthodontics, implantology, pre-prosthetic surgery, and oral soft tissues diseases treatments. Over 200 full-color photographs accompany step-by-step surgical procedures including frenectomy, removal of infected tumors, ablation of benign tumors, gingivectomy, treatment of vascular lesions, treatment of hyperkeratosis, and vestibular deepening. Finally, we engage in a round table discussion with some of the best international experts in the field of oral surgery.

This book enhances our understanding of the exquisitely beautiful, fourteenth-century, Middle English dream vision poem Pearl. Situating the study in the contexts of medieval literary criticism and contemporary genre theory, Beal argues that the poet intended Pearl to be read at four levels of meaning and in four corresponding genres: literally, an elegy; spiritually, an allegory; morally, a consolation; and anagogically, a revelation. The book addresses cruxes and scholarly debates about the poem’s genre and meaning, including key questions that have been unresolved in Pearl studies for over a century: * What is the nature of the relationship between the Dreamer and the Maiden? * What is the significance of allusions to Ovidian love stories and the use of liturgical time in the poem? * How does avian symbolism, like that of the central symbol of the pearl, develop, transform, and add meaning throughout the dream vision? * What is the nature of God portrayed in the poem, and how does the portrayal of the Maiden’s intimate relationship to God, her spiritual marriage to the Lamb, connect to the poet’s purpose in writing? Noting that the poem is open to many interpretations, Beal also considers folktale genre patterns in Pearl, including those drawn from parable, fable, and fairy-tale. The conclusion considers Pearl in the light of modern psychological theories of grieving and trauma. This book makes a compelling case for re-reading Pearl and recognizing the poem’s signifying power. Given the ongoing possibility of new interpretations, it will appeal to those who specialize in Pearl as well as scholars of Middle English, Medieval Literature, Genre Theory, and Literature and Religion.
