Are you tired? Do you suffer from chronic pain--headaches, backaches, or other persistent discomfort? Do you experience depression or feel anxious? Do you have allergies or autoimmune issues? Have you lost your sex drive somewhere along the way? If you have one or more of these symptoms, you may be suffering from what Rachel Carlton Abrams, MD, calls Chronic Body Depletion--a condition that can be related to weight gain, high blood pressure, exhaustion, and many other symptoms that leave the body drained. In BodyWise, Dr. Rachel helps us to understand that these symptoms, uncomfortable as they may be, are actually a sign of our body’s intelligence. Our bodies are trying to communicate--sometimes screaming at us to pay attention--and only when we learn to listen are we able to treat what ails us to achieve optimum healing and lifelong health. Dr. Rachel shares her customizable 28-day program, used with thousands of patients in her clinic, for healing the body both physically and emotionally. Through quizzes and detailed self-assessments, she explains how you can evaluate your own body wisdom for different areas in your life--including stress, sleep, libido, pain, anxiety, depression, allergies, and autoimmune issues. Guiding you through thoughtful diet, routine, and lifestyle changes, BodyWise will help you discover your own unique needs and offer you the principles and practices to create the vibrant, balanced, healthy life you have always deserved.

In the treatment of Anorexia Nervosa, delivering psychological interventions in a group format can bring unique benefits in addition to those associated with working with patients individually. These include: sharing experiences and learning from others in a safe and therapeutic environment, becoming accustomed to being with other people and practising interpersonal skills. However, these aspects of group treatment also represent a challenge for group facilitators as it is exactly these interpersonal and relational demands that patients find difficult to tolerate. Facilitators are likely to be confronted with low motivation, or complete disengagement, as a result of the discomfort evoked by spending time in psychological groups. Nonetheless, once these difficulties are successfully overcome, the group setting can be effectively utilised to address the specific aims of a given psychological intervention, as well as tapping into these wider benefits Drawing upon research carried out by the Maudsley national inpatient eating disorders programme, Brief Group Psychotherapy for Eating Disorders brings together expert contributions in order to review the evidence base, as well as discussing how the challenges of the group setting can be overcome. This book outlines newly-developed protocols for group interventions aimed at providing brief but effective treatment for an increased numbers of patients, and addresses the need to develop and evaluate cost effective psychological interventions for patients with Anorexia Nervosa. Brief Group Psychotherapy for Eating Disorders is designed to offer therapists, clinicians, and researchers in the field a synopsis of the available evidence along with guidance on how to put theory into practice effectively. It will also be an invaluable resource for students, trainees and teachers in the clinical, counselling, psychology, psychiatry, nursing, occupational therapy and other allied professions.

Practitioners and scholars explore ethical, social, and conceptual issues arising in relation to such devices as fitness monitors, neural implants, and a toe-controlled computer mouse. Body-centered computing now goes beyond the “wearable” to encompass implants, bionic technology, and ingestible sensors—technologies that point to hybrid bodies and blurred boundaries between human, computer, and artificial intelligence platforms. Such technologies promise to reconfigure the relationship between bodies and their environment, enabling new kinds of physiological interfacing, embodiment, and productivity. Using the term embodied computing to describe these devices, this book offers essays by practitioners and scholars from a variety of disciplines that explore the accompanying ethical, social, and conceptual issues. The contributors examine technologies that range from fitness monitors to neural implants to a toe-controlled mouse. They discuss topics that include the policy implications of ingestibles; the invasive potential of body area networks, which transmit data from bodily devices to the internet; cyborg experiments, linking a human brain directly to a computer; the evolution of the ankle monitor and other intrusive electronic monitoring devices; fashiontech, which offers users an aura of “cool” in exchange for their data; and the “final frontier” of technosupremacism: technologies that seek to read our minds. Taken together, the essays show the importance of considering embodied technologies in their social and political contexts rather than in isolated subjectivity or in purely quantitative terms.
