Excerpt from Heat Transmission in Boilers, Condensers, and Evaporators The experimental data and results given in Chapter IV of the volume on H eat Transmission by Radiation, Conduction, and Convection were mostly obtained from apparatus of small dimensions. Although these results illustrated the laws of the convection of heat and their relation to the resistance offered to the flow of fluids, they could not fairly be considered to be directly applicable to large boilers or heaters Without further investigation. The first chapter of the present volume is, 'therefore, devoted to the consideration of experiments on boilers and to comparisons With the results obtained from the small apparatus previously mentioned, as well as to examples of the application of the laws of heat transmission to design. Although a large number of isolated tests have been made on boilers of various types, relatively there are but few results available of an authentic character Where the boiler has been tested at various rates of evaporation and where a fair analysis of the losses could also be made. The problems associated With the transmission of heat in surface condensers and similar plant are quite as complicated as in boilers, but for different reasons. Here again in Chapter II only authentic experiments have been discussed, and an examination of the results shows how variable may be the rate of heat transmission from the steam to the water When condensation takes place in the presence of air. The trans mission of heat in evaporative condensers and in cooling towers and ponds is similarly complicated. The transmission of heat in evaporators is more or less dependent upon the same factors as in surface condensers, but is further com plicated by the conditions associated With the circulation and evaporation of the boiling liquid or solution undergoing con centration, particularly When the evaporator is of the multiple efiect type. Industrial desalination of sea and brackish water is becoming an essential part in providing sustainable sources of fresh water for a larger number of communities around the world. Desalination is a main source of fresh water in the Gulf countries, a number of the Caribbean and Mediterranean Islands, and several municipalities in a large number of countries. As the industry expands there is a pressing need to have a clear and well-written textbook that focuses on desalination fundamentals and other industrial aspects. This book focuses on the processes widely used in industry, which include multistage flash desalination and reverse osmosis. Also, other desalination processes with attractive features and high potential are featured. It includes a large number of solved examples, which are explained in simple and careful matter that allow the reader to follow and understand the development. The data used in the development of the examples and case studies are extracted from existing desalination plants. This title also includes comparisons of model predictions against results reported in literature as well as available experimental and industrial data. Several industries include similar unit operation processes, i.e., evaporators, condensers, flashing units, membrane separation, and chemical treatment. Examples of such industries include wastewater treatment, food, petroleum, petrochemical, power generation, and pulp and paper. Process fundamentals and design procedures of such unit processes follow the same procedures given in this textbook.

Researchers, practitioners, instructors, and students all welcomed the first edition of Heat Exchangers: Selection, Rating, and Thermal Design for gathering into one place the essence of the information they need-information formerly scattered throughout the literature. While retaining the basic objectives and popular features of the bestselling first edition, the second edition incorporates significant improvements and modifications. New in the Second Edition: Introductory material on heat transfer enhancement An application of the Bell-Delaware method New correlation for calculating heat transfer and friction coefficients for chevron-type plates Revision of many of the solved examples and the addition of several new ones The authors take a systematic approach to the subject of heat exchanger design, focusing on the fundamentals, selection, thermohydraulic design, design processes, and the rating and operational challenges of heat exchangers. It introduces thermal design by describing various types of single-phase and two-phase flow heat exchangers and their applications and demonstrates thermal design and rating processes through worked examples, exercises, and student design projects. Much of the text is devoted to describing and exemplifying double-pipe, shell-and-tube, compact, gasketed-plate heat exchanger types, condensers, and evaporators.
