An exploration of the field of phrenology, a 19th-century scientific discipline that sought to map the human mind by examining the shape and size of the skull. Drayton explains the principles of phrenology and its application to psychology and psychiatry, and offers practical advice for self-improvement and personal growth. This book is a fascinating window into a bygone era of science and medicine. Excerpt from Brain and Mind: Or, Mental Science Considered in Accordance With the Principles of Phrenology, and in Relation to Modern Physiology The various systems of Metaphysics, old and new, may serve the learned for discussion, criticism, and speculation; but a system of mental philosophy suited to the masses must be explicit and clear in its definitions and thoroughly practical. The value of a science consists mainly in its subservience to general application in the common affairs of life; and though it is possible for some branch of knowledge to be of eminent importance to the world, yet as long as its principles are so formulated that they can not be understood by the common mind, it must exert little influence in the world's behalf. All the old schemes of mental philosophy labor under the weight of inutility. While dealing with the highest properties of man, his relations as a social, moral, and intellectual being, their methods have been diverse, intricate, and obscure, and, consequently, the man of ordinary intelligence could not grasp their meaning. Phrenology, however, has the advantage of a physical basis; is simple and natural in its interpretations, and available as a means of usefulness to man in every condition. It has from the first won attention and wide acceptance from the people on account of its clear exposition of facts known to the experience of all, in terms which may be understood and verified by all.
