In the period before and after World War II, the Spanish, Cuban and Italian immigrants of Ybor City provided the labor for the cigar industry that dominated the local economy. Overcoming prejudice and poverty, the immigrants blended their customs to form a unique community that changed the face of Florida and ultimately the United States.
