Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2020 im Fachbereich Gesundheit - Ernährungswissenschaft, , Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: The aim of this review is to summarize the productive and reproductive performance of different indigenous cattle breeds under farmer’s management practices. Ethiopia is the home of large numbers of livestock due to having varied and extensive agro-ecological zones. From the total annual milk produced cattle milk, is the most prominent compared to other livestock species in Ethiopia. And also from the total annual meat produced cattle meat is the most prominent compared to other livestock species in Ethiopia. Numerous finding showed that calving interval, age at first calving, age at first service, number of service per conception and days open are one of the major measures of reproductive performance parameters for beef cattle production. Weight at different ages (including birth weight, weaning weight, 3 month weight, 6 month weight and yearling weight), meat yield, growth rate and carcass yield are one of the major measures of productive performance parameters for beef cattle production. Different report indicated that productive and reproductive performances of our indigenous cattle are very poor due to varied factors; the causes for low performances of beef cattle were genetic and environmental factors like feeding, housing and health care. In Ethiopia most of (98.20%) cattle breeds are local breeds the remaining (1.8%) are hybrid and exotic breeds. Then, the genetic performances of these breeds are poor, even though they have good adaptation in harsh environmental conditions. So, training and awareness creation should be given particularly to the farmers on major management practices like feeding, housing and health care and genetic improvement strategies should planned and practiced.

With the current Second Growth and Transformation Plan (2015-2020), the Government of Ethiopia expects the agro-industrial sector to play key role in economic growth of the Country. Accordingly, the creation of Integrated Agro-Industrial Parks has been identified as one of the key mechanisms for accelerating the development of the sector and the structural transformation of agriculture. Agro-industrial parks will play a significant role in transitioning Ethiopia from an agricultural-led into an industrial-led economy. In view of that, the development of Integrated Agro-Industrial Parks has been prioritized in Ethiopia’s national development strategy and four Agro-Industrial Growth Corridors have been selected for piloting the establishment of four Integrated Agro-Industrial Parks. The initiative aims at driving the structural transformation of the Ethiopian economy while reducing rural poverty and creating a better environment for increased investments in agro-processing and allied sectors. Since 1981, FAO has been a strong partner of the Government of Ethiopia towards the achievement of national food security and economic growth goals. FAO is working closely with the Ministry of Agriculture and Natural Resources to empower value chain actors and to promote inclusive, efficient and sustainable agricultural value chains. The present document is the second one of a series of detailed analyses of prioritized commodities, which will lead to inclusive, sustainable and stronger agricultural value chains in the Agro-Commodities Procurement Zone of the pilot Integrated Agro-Industrial Park in Central-Eastern Oromia.

The demand for beef continues to grow in response to increases in population and income. Satisfying this demand has been achieved by government sponsored expansion of the beef sector in some regions, importation of 'boxed' beef and live cattle, and increases in the off-take rate from established cattle populations. Such off-take from the Bali cattle heard in the Eastern Islands has led to speculation of a decline in numbers and loss of genetic merit of this important breed. Agaist this background ACIAR and CRIAS supported a project to provide a sound basis for government initiatives that support the Bali Cattle herd and the farmers who own and manage these cattle. The project considered the status of past and current breeding strategies and herd improvement programs, whether some of the concerns about herd size and quality are warranted, what breeding strategies would be best suited to the Eastern Islands, and what traits would be given highest priority in a breeding program. The project culminated in a workshop that brought together Indonesian and Australian expertise on Bali cattle production and herd improvement. These proceedings report input to that workshop and recommended strategies for the future development of the Bali cattle herd in eastern Indonesia.
