Bachelor Thesis from the year 2013 in the subject History - America, grade: 5,00, Warsaw University (English Philology), course: V, language: English, abstract: This bachelor thesis examines George Washington and his identity and the questions whether he identified himself more as British or as American. In studying the Founding Fathers one should take into consideration a political elite however a more open one than those holding sway in Europe. Moreover that elite had to interact with the people during the Revolution and in the periods of the Consideration and the Early Republic. Although they may have sought to direct the course of events and they had to respond the changes coming from below as well as the changes of opinions among the people, who were increasingly willing to express their own views, and follow their own way. One of the most disturbing theme in the studies arising doubts on the disinterestedness of the Founding Fathers is highlighting clashes of ideals and interests between different levels of American society, which caused some "ordinary people" wondered whether the American victory in Revolution was a hollow triumph. For these reasons, reconsidering the Founding Fathers within their historical context depicts the evolution of American politics and democracy, complementing these groups previously excluded from historical studies. Another point which cannot be ignored in discussion on the Founding Fathers is that they attempted to order the world however not by force, but with words by creating and adopting a series of documentation related to political foundation: institutions, declarations, bills of rights, treaties and laws. John Adams called this period "the age of revolutions and constitutions. The possibilities and limitations of ordering the world with words is the theme described in their writings. It was the issue which gave hope but frequently caused the frustration. In this circumstances re-examining the Founding Fathers helps to re

George Washington is an American hero whose fame is not wholly accounted for by the record of his life. Like Lincoln he was infinitely greater than anything he did. A military genius, he wrested liberty from tyranny; a statesman, he helped evolve a stable government from political chaos; a patriot, he refused a crown. Wisdom, patience, tolerance, courage, consecration to the righteous cause animated his every act. George Washington George Washington, the first president of the United States, is much more than a monument on Mount Rushmore. Who was Washington, the general, president, and husband? He was first and foremost a man of impeccable honor which, despite military adversity and political wrangling, never abandoned him. The Founding Fathers who squabbled and competed amongst themselves did agree on one thing: only Washington could lead the country, first in the country's military fight for freedom and then as the man charged with transforming thirteen individual states into a united country. But in his youth, George Washington did not intend to become the Father of his Country. As a younger son of a middling class Virginian, he intended to earn his living as a surveyor, and in that role, he was introduced to the vast potential of the country that would one day be a nation. But when the death of his older brother made him the heir to Mount Vernon, Washington ascended to leadership in the military, political and social spheres of Virginia and the United States. Inside you will read about... - The Washingtons of Virginia - Europe Exports its Wars to the Colonies - Washington at Mount Vernon - An Englishman no Longer - Washington at War - The Father of His Country - Return to Mount Vernon As a member and later officer in the Virginia militia, he fought with the British army against the French as the two European powers struggled for control of the rich Ohio Valley. The British, who would refuse Washington a commission in their army, would later meet him in battle as the commander-in-chief of the Continental Army, fighting for independence against the forces of King George III. As a political leader, he would become the architect of the American government. As the master of Mount Vernon, Washington's marriage to the wealthy Martha Dandridge Custis placed him among the elite of the Virginia aristocracy. His integrity established a model for subsequent generations to emulate. That few have managed to match his achievements is an indication of his influence and character. Meet George Washington, the man, and discover the identity of this remarkable leader.
