Excerpt from British Policy in South Africa This volume is an attempt to apply to a practical question of current politics the view of British policy which in previous essays the author has endeavoured to set forth and to justify. The South African crisis is perhaps not yet at an end; but the reader to whom the account here given of its nature commends itself will have little difficulty in forming his opinion with regard to the phases of the action which may still be to come. Excerpt from The Geography of British South Africa In this book I have tried to describe in a simple way the main geographical features of British South Africa. In doing so it is impossible to avoid altogether the history of past quarrels, but in mentioning them I have endeavoured to be fair, and to keep clear of political controversies which are still hot. I have not thought it wise to go into any statistics. These pass out of date almost as speedily as they slip from the memory. But the physical features of the land, its climate and resources, the character of its inhabitants, its flora and fauna, its industries and occupations are more or less abiding. To these I have given most space. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from History of the War in South Africa: Containing an Authentic Account of the Great Struggle Between the British and the Boers The English Army and the Boers have met in the shock of battle in South Africa. All attempts to avert the desperate conflict have failed and the eyes of the whole world are turned to watch the progress of the fierce struggle. The first settlement of the Boers in South Africa - another name for Dutch inhabitants - dates from the sixteenth century. They have received accessions from the Huguenots of France, but retain the old Dutch character. After the final cession of the Cape of Good Hope to England in.i§14 they disliked the new Govern ment, especially its friendly policy to the natives and the emancipa tion of the slaves in 1833, the Boers having long been slaveholders. They moved northward and occupied the Orange Free State and the Transvaal. The Boers are the landholders and farmers of South Africa, famous for their courage and endurance, of strong and well developed physique, good horsemen and splendid marksmen. They have proved themselves to be terrible fighters on many occasions. Previous to 1870 the Boers had much trouble with the surrounding native tribes, which resulted in many sanguinary battles. Wars were of frequent occurrence and little progress was made in the development of the country. The selfish policy of the Boers caused constant irritation with England. In 1877, owing to an exhausted public treasury and accumulated debts brought about by conflicts with the Zulus and other tribes, the Transvaal, or South African Republic, was on the eve of dissolution and the country about to relapse into barbarism. To avert this catastrophe the British Government assumed the care of it, subjugated the rebel lious natives, and put the finances of the State in good condition. Excerpt from British Imperialism The great increase of strength received by the British Empire in quite recent times, and the other changes which it has undergone, have hitherto been very inadequately realised even by those nations whose interests are most affected by them. The increase of territory and population following on the South African War, and the development of the political organisa tion (especially noticeable in the formation of the Commonwealth of Australia) are not the only signs of these changes. Excerpt from The Times History of the War in South Africa, 1899-1902, Vol. 2 IN the preceding volume the political causes of the South African War were traced from the British acquisition of Cape Colony down to the ultimatum presented to the British Government by the Transvaal on October 9, 1899. The military antecedents of that war, and the narrative of the first three months of fighting, from the expiration of the ultimatum down to the battle of Colenso, form the contents of the present volume.
