NATIONAL BESTSELLER A MACLEAN'S SUMMER READ The hugely anticipated follow up to Heat--Bill Buford's hilariously self-deprecating, highly obsessive adventures in the world of French haute cuisine. In Dirt, Bill Buford--author of the best-selling, now-classic, Heat--moves his attention from Italian cuisine to the food of France. Baffled by the language, determined that he can master the art of French cooking--or at least get to the bottom of why it is so revered--Buford begins what will become a five-year odyssey by shadowing the revered French chef Michel Richard in Washington, D.C. He soon realizes, however, that a stage in France is necessary, and so he goes--this time with his wife and three-year-old twin sons in tow--to Lyon, the gastronomic capital of France. Studying at l'Institut Bocuse, cooking at the storied, Michelin-starred Mère Brazier, Buford becomes a man obsessed--to prove that French cooking actually derives from the Italian, to prove himself on the line, to prove that he is worthy of these gastronomic secrets. With his signature humor, sense of adventure, and masterful ability to immerse himself in his surroundings, Bill Buford has written what is sure to be the food-lover's book of the year.

Includes more than 25 maps and illustrations This study investigates the American Civil War role and contributions of Major General John Buford. Buford, a 1848 graduate of the United States Military Academy, began his Army career on America’s frontier with the First United States Dragoons. With the outbreak of the Civil War, Buford was selected to command a cavalry brigade in John Pope’s Army of Virginia, and participated in the Second Manassas Campaign. Buford went on to make significant contributions to the Union efforts in the Eastern Theater; however, history has generally portrayed Buford as a one-dimensional character based on his stand along McPherson and Seminary Ridges on the first day of the Battle of Gettysburg. Several historians have presumed that the dismounted cavalry (or Dragoon) tactics used by Buford at Gettysburg were the culmination of a method of fighting which he helped develop and propagate within the Union cavalry. However, this thesis shows that contrary to this Dragoon image, Buford was in fact a remarkable cavalry officer. His battlefield tactics were fairly traditional, but it was not in pitched battles that Buford excelled. His significant contributions were in the established roles of cavalry; performing reconnaissance and providing security for the army he was supporting.

Year 1968, without question, was the year civil unrest and disobedience rose to the forefront of American life in a manner never seen since the South seceding from the Union. From the Vietnam War and the political assassinations of Martin Luther King Jr. and Robert Kennedy to the Democratic National Convention and the violent demonstrations demanding human rights, Americans were roused and demanded their voices be heard. During those tumultuous twelve months, not a single American family remained unscathed. The demands for national desegregation, racial equality, and women’s rights continued to reverberate. Needless to say, the cry for ending the Vietnam War was paramount. Buford’s Mailbox: Sketches of 1968 depicts the life of a typical heartland family as told by the voice of the mailbox and how the events of 1968 insisting on social and political change impacted Molly Hatcher Buford’s family ties, triumphs, and tribulations.

Please note: This is a companion version & not the original book. Sample Book Insights: #1 The downfall of Rome was due to the fact that people, being fed by the State, ceased to have any responsibility for themselves or their children, and became a nation of wasters. #2 The author once traveled home from Wales by train. The station was a village station just outside Cardiff, and I arrived early. I bought a cup of tea. It was a cold Saturday evening, and only three or four other passengers were on the platform. A man was reading a newspaper, rocking back and forth on his feet. #3 The violence I saw was a protest of some sort. It made sense that it would be, as so many young people were out of work or had never been able to find any. It was a rebellion of some sort, social or class rebellion. #4 I explained that I had only attended one football game, years before when I was in Mexico City. My friends were unimpressed. They did not understand why I found the supporters’ behavior so bizarre and difficult to understand.

They have names like Barmy Bernie, Daft Donald, and Steamin' Sammy. They like lager (in huge quantities), the Queen, football clubs (especially Manchester United), and themselves. Their dislike encompasses the rest of the known universe, and England's soccer thugs express it in ways that range from mere vandalism to riots that terrorize entire cities. Now Bill Buford, editor of the prestigious journal Granta, enters this alternate society and records both its savageries and its sinister allure with the social imagination of a George Orwell and the raw personal engagement of a Hunter Thompson.

Author Bob Buford called them "code breakers." They are people age 40 and older who have pioneered the art of finishing well in these modern times, and who can teach us to do the same, starting today. Buford sought out 60 of these trailblazers--including Peter Drucker, Roger Staubach, Jim Collins, Ken Blanchard, and Dallas Willard--and has recorded their lively conversations in these pages so that they can serve as "mentors in print" for all of us. "Twenty years from now," Buford writes, "the rules for this second adulthood as a productive season of life may be better known. But for now, we're out across the frontier breaking new ground." Buford gives you a chance to sit at the feet of these pioneers and learn the art of finishing well so you can shift into a far more fulfilling life now, no matter your age, and pursue a lasting significance that will be a legacy for future generations.
