Excerpt from Business English: A Practice Book Tee author of this book and the writer of this preface have never met. Their respective fields of labor are a thousand miles apart. Yet such is the force of ideas that many of their thoughts and sympathies are common. Business English! The very name is an anomaly. F rom' a literary point'of view there is no such thing. English is Eng lish whether it be used to express the creations of our imagina tion, our aesthetic appreciations, or our daily wants. There is no magical combination of words, phrases, and sentences that is peculiar and distinctive to business transactions. Business Eng lish as used in these pages means effective communication, both oral and written. The author's aim throughout has been to teach the art of using words in such a way as to make people think and act. To do this she has applied the principles of lit crary composition to the highly complex and ever increasing problems of our business life. She realizes that business is vital, and that the problems of commerce are not to be met and handled with dead forms and stereotyped expressions of legal blanks. Excerpt from Essentials of Business English In the preparation of this text, the authors have made no attempt at originality, except as to the manner of pre senting the subject. They have kept uppermost in mind the Object to be attained - the ability on the part of the student to use correct English. With this end in view, the material has been selected from various sources, and so modified and arranged as to produce this result with the least expenditure of time on the part of the student, and a minimum of work on the part of the teacher. No attempt has been made to produce an exhaustive treatise for the few, but rather a book of essentials for the many; nor has any effort been made to speculate upon the technical phases of the subject. The student's need is not theory and comment, but rather the rules and principles, with their proper application. I t is utterly useless to learn rules unless one learns to apply them. Excerpt from Business English This work grew out of teaching English to college men who were beginning their studies in Engineering. It seemed for various reasons desirable to give such students - along with their work in pure literature and technical English - some in struction in English as adapted to buying and selling, advertis ing and correspondence. There seemed however to be no text-book quite available for such a purpose. A purely elementary text-book, ignoring all high-school English and some of the grammar-school instruo tion, would not do. Nor could the need be supplied by some more advanced book devoted to the principles of correspond ence. What was needed was a book which took into considera tion the best standards and scholarship of college teaching, and applied the established principles of composition to the special problems of business, with due reference to the vocabularies of commerce and commercial law. From this point of view, then, the text of the book was writ ten. When finished, much of it was seen to be Within the grasp of younger students. It was then determined to simplify the text a little further, and to construct exercises which would make the book serviceable in the third and fourth year of tech nical and commercial high schools, in the first year of technical colleges, in business colleges, and in correspondence work. The manner in which this adjustment has been made may be seen at a glance in the exercises under Argument (p.
