A conference on timber supply in Canada had the objectives of assessing the opportunities to maintain and expand the sustainable supply of timber, and of examining how sustainable development initiatives area changing the way Canadian forests are managed. This volume contains the conference presentations, summaries of provincial timber supply status reports, and rapporteurs' reports. Topics of the presentations include investment and environmental perspectives on the demand for timber supplies, the challenge of environmental trade barriers, the influences on timber supply, ecosystem and landscape management, integrated resource management, the role of private woodlots, model forests, forest policy, and the role of aboriginals in forest management. Appendices provide the texts of the provincial and territorial timber supply status reports, which include statistics.

Projecting modest future growth for both prices and harvest levels, this study, first published in 1990, provides theoretical and empirical justification for challenging the conventional wisdom that real timber prices will rise for the indefinite future. The study presents fifty-year projections of regional and world harvest levels, world market price, and investments in forest regeneration by region. This book will be of particular interest to students of economics and environmental studies.

Estimates the price responsiveness of timber supply for quota holders in Alberta, with quota holders divided into three categories based on their timber production capacities. Results indicate the influence of cost structures associated with seasonal conditions on timber supply decisions, and the responsiveness of timber supply to market prices for lumber. A dynamic optimisation technique was used to predict timber supply in the face of institutional constraints and to estimate shadow prices of those constraints. Expected values of lumber prices, wood chip prices, and interest rates were used in the econometric model, and the cost structure of large, medium, and small quota holders were calibrated so that the modelled behaviour mimics actual timber production. Results show the effect of institutional constraints on costs incurred by quota holders.

Excerpt from The Timber Supply Question of the Dominion of Canada and the United States of America When, a few years ago, it was rumored that the coal fields of Great Britain would not supply the then rate of consumption for more than two or three generations, a general alarm at the prospect of so terrible a calamity, so soon to fall on the nation, immediately manifested itself. It became the question of the day, the Press was full of it, had daily leaders on it, and it was made a subject of Parliamentary inquiry, and, until it was satisfactorily ascertained, by practical exploration and surveys, that there was coal enough in the country for many centuries, the question was the one absorbing topic of conversation and discussion amongst all classes in the British Isles. The question of the Timber supply here is of as much importance to us and the people of the neighboring States as that of the coal supply, which so powerfully exercised the minds of the people of Britain, could possibly be to them.
