Canadian Mineral Policy Formulation

Short, selective history of Canadian mineral policy and analysis of contemporary mineral policy.

A Stake in the Future is a comprehensive study of the Whitehorse Mining Initiative, which was first conceived by the leaders in the Canadian mining industry. The goal was to revitalize the mining industry, attract new investment and forge an alliance with major stakeholders such as government, environmental groups, First Nations, the mining industry, and labour. The book examines the political, cultural, and policy issues involved in developing a new consenus-based approach to resolving land and resource use disputes with particular focus on a national multi-stakeholder initiative in the mineral sector.

This document sets out, within areas of federal jurisdiction, the Government's role, objectives and strategies for the sustainable development of Canada's mineral and metal resources. The Policy builds on relevant federal policy initiatives. It also builds on a document called Sustainable Development and Minerals and Metals: An Issue Paper, which was released by the Minister of Natural Resources in September 1995. This document presents the conceptual foundation for the application of sustainable development to minerals and metals.

This report provides an overview of the federal, provincial and territorial policy initiatives from 1985-89. The report covers only changes and new activities introduced over the five years, rather than ongoing and unaltered programs. Policies still in the development stage were included only if they were already in the process of public discussion. Oil and gas, except for oil sands, are excluded. Policy initiatives are listed by province and for the federal government, with a separate listing for federal policy initiatives North of 60. For each area, information is given on mineral-related task forces and studies, assistance initiatives, regulation, and trade initiatives.
