Canadian Model Forest Network Achievements

As part of the Green Plan, introduced by the Federal Government in late 1990, a network of model forests was developed to demonstrate the concept of sustainable forest management in practical terms on a working scale. This annual report describes the competitive site selection process, the forests involved in the project, program milestones, the operation of model forests, and highlights of the project. Financial data is included.

Working together, the Canadian forest community has recorded a number of major achievements toward meeting the goal of sustainable forests. This report reviews key achievements in the National Forest Strategy's goal of sustainable forests. Activities by government, industry, academia, woodlot owners, environmental groups, and other organizations are reviewed in the following categories: forest ecosystems and multiple values; forest management; public participation; the forest industry; forest science & technology management; human resources; Aboriginal peoples; private woodlots; and international initiatives.

A model forest is a place where the best sustainable forest management practices are developed, tested and shared across the country. This document provides information on Canada's Model Forest Program and presents examples of sustainable forest management initiatives at model forests across Canada.
