Carian Trail (Carian Way) Topographic Maps with 20m Elevation ContoursThis Carian Trail Map Series consists of 7 large format atlases (8.5x11in) that together cover the longest hiking route in Mediterranean Turkey, about 850km in total length. The maps are specifically designed for trekkers, hikers and walkers of all levels, to make it easy to plan and enjoy both short excursions and long multi-day trekking adventures. Special attention has been given to water sources, most of which are not shown on any other maps: springs, wells, cisterns and drinking water fountains. The maps also show locations of all known cities and towns of ancient Caria, Lydia and other civilizations of Asia Minor so that you can put a name to the ruins you see along the way.All neighboring maps (atlases and pages within atlases) overlap each other on the borders to make it easy to navigate when you need to switch to the next atlas or page. Unlike a GPS receiver or a navigation app on your phone, these paper atlases don't require batteries and are totally shatter proof, making them an important insurance against getting lost in unfamiliar terrain. Large format pages make navigation comfortable and reduce the page count (and thus the weight and bulk) to the ultralight backpacking territory. The maps extend well beyond the immediate surroundings of the Carian Trail to provide you with context and options for change of plans or your own exploration. Mercator projection with both UTM and WGS84 coordinate grids. Features include road & trail network, tourist attractions, transportation, food, water sources, campsites, guest houses & hotels. These are the maps you need for the official sections: Bozburun Peninsula: Map 7Datca Peninsula: Map 7Gulf of Gokova: Maps 3, 5 and 6Carian Hinterland (aka Latmos Mountains Section): Maps 2, 3 and optionally, Map 1Mugla Environs: Maps 4 and 5Dalyan Delta: Map 6Below are detailed descriptions of the maps.Carian Trail Map 1 (Dilek Peninsula & Lake Bafa)Map 1 covers the whole of Lake Bafa and the beautiful Dilek Peninsula National Park. Carian Trail Map 2 (Milas - Karpuzlu)Map 2 covers the northern part of the Hinterland Section (Latmos Mountains) from Milas to Karpuzlu and adjacent areas. You will also need Map 3 to cover the whole Hinterland Section.Carian Trail Map 3 (Bodrum Peninsula)Map 3 covers the southern part of the Hinterland Section and part of the Gulf of Gokova (the Ceramic Gulf) Section, plus the whole of the Bodrum Peninsula. Carian Trail Map 4 (Mugla - Stratonikeia)Map 4 covers the northern part of the Mugla Environs Section, from Yenikoy in the south, through Mugla, Bayir, and to the end point of the section, the ruins of the ancient city of Stratonikeia. The map extends further to Yatagan.Carian Trail Map 5 (Akyaka - Mugla & Oren) Map 5 covers the southern part of the Mugla Environs Section and part of the Gulf of Gokova. Carian Trail Map 6 (Marmaris - Akyaka & Dalyan)Map 6 covers south-eastern part of the Gulf of Gokova, extending from Marmaris to Akyaka (to cover areas to the south of Marmaris, you need Map 7). Ay e Metin - a 38-year-old mother from Istanbul - decides to tackle the Lycian Way in southern Turkey. She has never camped alone in her life. As she strikes out into Lycia's ancient forests, she is on a quest to leave behind the past. But the Lycian Way is a footpath steeped in memories. Unknown to Ay e, as she clambers over the precipices of the Mediterranean coast and through the lost cities of the trail, she is walking in someone else's footsteps. 2500 years earlier, when Lycia was an independent state and worshipped the Goddess Leto, the Persian general Harpagos was stomping along the very same road in a bid to take over the ancient world. As Ay e continues her lone, meandering odyssey of self-discovery, her troubled youth in Istanbul re-emerges. But she's not the only one to remember. Unknown to most, the legends of old still haunt Lycia. Her stories call out to the walkers and shepherds as they climb over her timeless skin. Because time is not what we think it is. The past is never over. And a map can only ever tell so much of what a trail is all about. Based on the true story of Ay e Metin."

The conference on which the present volume is based took place in Oxford in the summer of 2006. It brought together linguists, archaologists, epigraphists, numismatists and historians and allowed them to exchange ideas about a period of major transition in Karian history: the fourth century and the two centuries after Alexander. This was first a period of great starapal visibility and presence, but then alsol of intense civic engagement and increased political awareness among Karian communities. The symbiotic relationship between the islands of the Dodekanese, in particular Rhodes and Kos, and the coastal regions of Karia forms another major theme. Finally, a number of papers pick up on a major recent trend in the study of Anatolian culture, namely the investigation of cross-cultural Greeak-Anatolian interactions in the Late Bronze and Early Iron Ages and their echoes in later periods.
