Excerpt from Old English Poetry: Translations Into Alliterative Verse With Introductions and Notes In this book of Old English poetry an effort has been made to bring together and reproduce in modern English alliterative verse, the best and most representative portions of the considerable body of extant poetry produced in England between the time of the Anglo-Saxon invasion and the Norman conquest. The classification of this poetry into the main types of Epic, Lyric, Gnomic and Historic Poetry, while necessarily formal, does no real violence to the principle of historic continuity. Widsith and Beowulf belong to the earlier period, Brunnanburg and Maldon to the later, and to this extent the arrangement is chronological as well as topical. The conditions under which this early poetry was produced and transmitted render exact dating extremely difficult or impossible and in view of the comparative fixity of form throughout the whole period, the division according to genre is not only the most convenient but the most natural. While designed chiefly for use in College and High School in connection with survey courses in English literature, it is hoped that the general reader and student of English literature and history may find more than mere text-book matter in the volume. The brief general introductions to the various types, Heroic Epic, Biblical Epic, Saints' Legends, etc., if read through consecutively, will give a fair survey of the field of Old English poetry, and the selected bibliography will orient the student who wishes to pursue further his reading in this field. Excerpt from Tales in Verse This volume is not for the Critic. I do not say that it is not for Review. Such preface needs explanation, and perhaps apology. I give the latter first, having no quarrel with Critics or Reviewers. Those of either class who have noticed my previous work have given it its full due, Often more than its due and when the genuine Critic has taken it in hand, I have always found that the flaws pointed out were apparent from his point of view. I am not myself a professional critic of poetry, but a somewhat desultory student. Still, one who has written in rhythm for more than. Excerpt from Miscellaneous Pieces: In Poetry and Verse IT is not mine to mount the Poet's car. Rolling through Ether to Parnassus' height It is not mine to tread the wide - the far And gather visions unperceived by sight. It is not mine to trace ideal views Of things, which genius easily combines Nor can I call, to aid my humble Muse, The scenes imaginative power defines. It is not mine the vasty deep to trace, And find the image of the inward thought; Nor can I soar through realms of boundless Space Embodying phantoms in a form untaught. Excerpt from Forms of English Poetry This book contains nothing more than every young person should know about the construction of English verse, and its main divisions both by forms and by subject-matter. The historical development of eight of these divisions is sketched and briefly illustrated by examples, but the true character of poetry as an art and a social force has always been in the writer's mind. The study of prosody pure and simple is to most students of an average class wearisome and fruitless, though there are but few who do not become interested in poetry if the technical side is not exclusively regarded by the teacher. Such an interest naturally acquired in youth is of great value. It becomes part of character. Therefore, in this book, only the elements of prosody are given, for it is addressed to young people and to general readers. Still the outline view of several departments that may be obtained from it may serve to render subsequent minute historical study of some one form more fruitful in coordinated ideas and less apt to result in partial conceptions. The writer has reason to think that there is room for a book of this character even in these days of careful specialization. The author's thanks are due to Messrs. Houghton, Mifflin, and Co. for permission to print illustrative extracts from Mr. Lowell's odes, and to Messrs. Charles Scribner's Sons for similar courtesy in the case of passages from Sidney Lanier's Centennial Cantata, and Miss Hapgood's Epic Songs of Russia. Excerpt from Etchings in Verse Desolation. In the Kingdom of the gloaming Where the days are gray, and dim - Dim, and gray and pensive - Where the dead past's thoughts go roaming Like the fallen seraphim, Once I wandered 'neath the luster Of a spectral, leaden moon - 'Neath a moon of lurid luster, Where the sad lights fade and swoon.
