Today′s chemists need to know how hazardous the chemicals they work with are, and they want to understand the relationship between chemical and structural properties and toxicity. At the same time, modern society requires that chemists have this kowledge, as legislation makes the producers/users of chemicals responsible for any adverse effects. The book deals with the effects on both man and ecosystems. It stresses especially on the relationship between chemical structure and chemical properties/toxic effects and metabolic conversions. This is not just another book on toxicology. What makes this book special is that it is written from a chemical point of view. This textbook applies the basic principles of reactivity and reaction possibilities of organic compounds to metabolic reactions and living systems.

There is no need in the 1970s to explain the writing of a book on "Environmen tal Chemistry. " The despoliation of the environment by man's activities has long been clear to chemists. However, it has been the subject of public debate for a short time-since the late 1960s. Curiously, there has been little reaction in the textbook literature to reflect this concern. Apart from some brief and sketchy paperbacks for schools, there has not yet been published a substantial review of environmental chemistry. One reason for this is the breadth of the chemistry involved: it could scarcely be covered by one or two authors, for it is as wide as chemistry itself. The ideal way to write such a book would be to gather a couple of dozen authors in one place and keep them together for 6 months of discussions and writing. This not being very practical, it was decided to do the next best thing and to attempt to network a number of men together in mutual correspondence and interaction, which would lead to a book that had the advantages of the expertise of a large number of persons, and lacked many of the usual disadvan tages of the multi author book. Thus, synopses of the various articles were sent to each author, and they were encouraged to interact with each other in attempting to avoid repetition and in keeping their symbols uniform and their presentation style coordinated.

The oceans cover more than 70% of the earth's surface to an average depth of almost 4000 metres. It is therefore not surprising that exchanges that occur between ocean and atmosphere exert major influences on the global climate. In addition, there is great variety within the expanses of the ocean, including large temperature differences, and enormous biodiversity brought about by the great chemical diversity within the marine environment. Written by international experts in the field, Chemistry in the Marine Environment offers a multidisciplinary and authoritative review of this important topic. Included is a review of the opportunities and challenges in developing new pharmaceuticals from the sea and an examination of contamination and pollution in the marine environment, which is a cause of great concern world-wide. The international perspective of this book will engage the interest and attention of a wide readership, from chemical oceanographers to policymakers, from students in environmental science to those in oceanography programmes.

Knowledge about the environment is key to its protection and improvement. It is important for us to understand the laws that govern the ongoing processes within the environment. Environmental studies is of significant importance to scientists and environmentalistsbecause of rapid loss of biodiversity, sudden and unpredictable climate changes, water pollution, ozone layer depletion, and land degradation. Environmental Studies: basic concepts discusses the various components and types of environment, the different types of natural resources and the problems faced in conserving them and the effective management of resources for sustainable lifestyles. This book also focuses on the concept, structure and function of an ecosystem, threats to biodiversity and conservation of biodiversity, causes, effects and control measures of pollution, the several types of pollution, hazardous effects of human population on environment and management of environment quality.
