Excerpt from Children of the Land: The Story of the Macdonald Movement in Canada Manual training, the vehicle by which agriculture and education were to be brought together, was the next step. Ar going that an example provided in a town is the most effective method of stimulating the Officials Of rural schools, Sir William, upon the advice of Dr. Robertson, founded throughout Canada manual training centers at twenty-one places. These were attended by children and cost a month for teachers. At the end of three years the local authorities were free to continue the schools or not, as they chose. The leaven performed its task. In every case the school was taken over and others added. In Nova Scotia more than a score of school centers of the Macdonald type have been built and are conducted by means of local funds. In Ontario the three Macdonald centers have grown to more than twoscore. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Stories of the Maple Land: Tales of the Early Days of Canada for Children The Maple-tree and the Horse-chestnut grew close together, just by the side of the big school. They both were very fond of the children, and might often have been seen with their branches twined together peeping through the windows. This morning the Maple seemed in high spirits. Indeed she had just been given a new spring dress, and very proud she was of it, too. No wonder either, for it was such a dainty, fresh shade of green, and her branches looked so grace fill with their weight of baby leaves, from which the sun had kissed away the last stubborn twist and wrinkle. The Horse-chestnut felt rather dull. She was not dressed yet, and was mil of sorts because the sun had not given her enough help. Throughout the nineteenth and most of the twentieth century, the majority of Canadians argued that European "civilization" must replace Indigenous culture. The ultimate objective was assimilation into the dominant society. Seen but Not Seen explores the history of Indigenous marginalization and why non-Indigenous Canadians failed to recognize Indigenous societies and cultures as worthy of respect. Approaching the issue biographically, Donald B. Smith presents the commentaries of sixteen influential Canadians – including John A. Macdonald, George Grant, and Emily Carr – who spoke extensively on Indigenous subjects. Supported by documentary records spanning over nearly two centuries, Seen but Not Seen covers fresh ground in the history of settler-Indigenous relations.
