This book, likely the first of its kind in the English language, explores Chinese for specific and professional purposes (CSP) in terms of theorizing and developing practical applications for language teaching and learning. While research in language for specific purposes is thriving for languages such as English, there has been comparatively little such research conducted for Chinese. This volume attempts to fill the gap by bringing together practitioners from a broad international scholarly community, who share common interests yet diverse orientations. Seventeen papers are included, and address four broad thematic categories: (1) academic Chinese, (2) business Chinese, (3) Chinese for medicine and health care, and (4) Chinese for other broadly defined services and industries (diplomacy, tourism, wine-tasting, etc.). This volume presents a series of the most up-to-date studies on Chinese for Specific Purposes (CSP), an area that has been underrepresented in Language for Specific Purposes (LSP). Drawing from the insights and trends in mainstream theoretical and methodological LSP research, chapters in this volume explore novelties that CSP has developed to prepare Chinese for professional learners for the global economy. These encompass: needs analysis of less-surveyed high school Business Chinese or CSP academic writing classes developments on internationally oriented engineering and internship programs in China innovations in Chinese for business or legal materials development and review on textbook pragmatics studies on language arts and Chinese language use in specific or business settings technology-driven, project-based learning — or discipline-specific curriculum design. Robustly supported by studies and analysis on the global scale, this volume comprises contributions by professionals from universities across Asia and the United States, each with decades of expertise in LSP. Food issues 食事. Interdisciplinary Studies on Food in Modern and Contemporary East Asiaconcentrates on the relationship among food, culture, literature, and language in a comparative, transcultural, or literary perspective. The contributions investigate these aspects from different approaches: historical, sociological, anthropological, religious, linguistic, and want to deepen issues such as the symbolic value of food; food as an essential element for the construction of individual identity and a sign of belonging to a community; food as an intercultural medium; food as language and the language of food. The articles included in the volume are organized in a Japanese and a Chinese section and use different approaches within humanities disciplines to explore topics ranging from classical and contemporary East Asian literature to present-day issues, focusing on Food Culture and its declinations.

Treatment decision-making is a significant phase in outpatient interaction. Distinct formats of treatment recommendations may exert influences on both opportunities and consequences for patient participation in the process. Taking naturally occurring Chinese outpatient clinical conversations as the data and drawing from the analytic apparatuses provided by Conversation Analysis, this book represents an attempt to conduct a systematically descriptive and analytic study of the position and composition of treatment recommendations in doctor-patient interactions in Chinese outpatient clinics. By incorporating the analysis of epistemic and deontic orientations into the examination of particular linguistic resources employed to formulate the initiation, construction of, and responses to treatment recommendations, the study uncovers how Chinese doctors and patients steer the interactional trajectories of treatment decision-making through talk-in-interaction. The book can serve as a reference to the research on treatment decision-making in various kinds of Chinese medical settings. In addition, the insights from the study could provide a reference for understanding how Chinese doctors’ medical authority and patients’ agency are generally executed, challenged, and sustained via talk in the new era of patient-centered medical care.

This book constitutes the refereed conference proceedings of the 6th International Symposium on Emerging Technologies for Education, SETE 2021, held in Zhuhai, China in November 2021. 35 full papers were accepted together with 8 short papers out of 58 submissions. Pedagogical Grammar and Grammar Pedagogy in Chinese as a Second Language is the first book in the field of Chinese as a second language that brings together one overview article and eleven research studies surrounding the key words "grammar" "pedagogy" and "Chinese as a second language." The book is a dedication to the 60th anniversary of the Chinese Language Teachers Association – U.S. The studies included draw on different theoretical frameworks, adopt a range of methodological strategies, and address the questions of how grammatical knowledge should be effectively presented and in what capacity grammar competence could be better developed in and outside classrooms, based on which pedagogical recommendations and implications are advanced. The publication of this monograph is aimed at three goals: to promote a dialogue between the field of Chinese as a second language and general field of second/foreign language teaching and learning; to bridge a link among researchers in Chinese linguistics and Chinese applied linguistics; and to establish a closer tie between research and classroom practices in L2 Chinese.
