The present Volume is designed in part to fulfil that promise; it includes the consideration of a subject of a more purely theological kind several times adverted to in the former volume, - and which it seemed advisable to put forth in a separate form, - the relation of Christianity to Judaism. The reference to this subject arose out of certain remarks on the bearing of the results of science on religious belief; a topic which, in its wider extent, will form the subject of a third series of Essays.
