"Civil Defense Booklets" is the 2nd volume in The Red Dog Nuclear Survival Series. The book contains four official U.S. government civil defense booklets spanning the course of the cold war. Clearly written and richly illustrated, it serves as an essential information resource for those learning to survive the effects of nuclear weapons. According to the U.S. Senate Committee on Homeland Security in 2017, millions of Americans-perhaps the majority of the population-would die if the electrical grid went down for a significant period of time. In 1963 the Home Office and Central Office of Information distributed this handbook for the civil defence, police and fire services to advise the public on what to do in the event of a nuclear attack. The booklet told people what to do to protect themselves, their family and their home. From how to build an outdoor fall-out shelter and put together a survival pack, to what to do if a warning sounds, this is a terrifying glimpse of life under the threat of nuclear attack. Published to coincide with the V&A's Cold War Modern exhibition, this fully illustrated facsimile is also an excellent example of graphic design and illustration from the period.

This open access edited collection brings together established and new perspectives on Cold War civil defence in Western Europe within a common analytical framework that also facilitates comparative and transnational dimensions. The current interest in creating disaster-resilient societies demands new histories of civil defence. Historical contextualization is essential in order to understand what is at stake in preparing, devising, and implementing forms of preparedness, protection, and security that are specifically targeted at societies and citizens. Applying the concept of sociotechnical imaginaries to civil defence history, the chapters of this volume cover a range of new themes, from technology and materiality to media, memory, and everyday experience. The book underlines the social embeddedness of civil defence by detailing how it both prompted new forms of social interaction and reflected norms and visions of the ‘good society’ in an age where nuclear technology seemed to hold the key to both doom and salvation.
