No other nonhuman source has served as the basis for more metaphors than animals. Speaking of Animals is a dictionary of animal metaphors that are current in American English. It is comprehensive, historical, and metaphor-based. Each entry refers to the other dictionaries that catalog that same metaphor, and the dates of first appearance in writing are supplied, where possible, for both the metaphor and the name of the source. The main text is organized alphabetically by metaphor rather than by animal or animal behavior; all the metaphors are classified according to their animal source in a list at the end of the book. An animal metaphor is a word, phrase, or sentence that expresses a resemblance or similarity between someone or something and a particular animal or animal class. True metaphors are single words, such as the noun tiger, the verb hog, and the adjective chicken. Phrasal metaphors combine true metaphors with other words, such as blind tiger, hog the road, and chicken colonel. Other animal metaphors take the form of similes, such as like rats leaving a sinking ship and prickly as a hedgehog. Still others take the form of proverbs, such as Don't count your chickens before they hatch and Let sleeping dogs lie. The horse is the animal most frequently referred to in metaphors, followed closely by the dog. The Bible is the most prolific literary source of animal metaphors, followed closely by Shakespeare.

For twenty-five years she was a corporate bitch, and now has shifted from bitch to rich! “Do you have any idea how hurtful you are to people?” Linda asked. She shook her head and did everything she could to avoid eye contact with me. I looked across the room at Sheila, searching for some validation of what Linda had said. All I could see was her slumped in her chair, sitting silently as Brian talked in her ear. As a young woman, Bernadette Boas was anything but a bitch. Raised by loving, Irish Catholic parents in a Philadelphia suburb in the 1960’s, she was the middle child of twelve--a sassy, precocious girl with big dreams of a big life. At the age of eighteen, Bernadette left home with the love and support of her family and headed South to Boca Raton, Florida, where she began to climb the corporate ladder. There, amidst palm trees and sandy beaches, the sun began to set on her once glowing personality. A driven, ambitious young woman, Bernadette began to emulate the negative, competitive attitudes of her coworkers--men and women--in her quest for success. She gained a reputation for being aggressive, demanding, and brash. Through hard work and perseverance, she attained tremendous success and achievement through managerial and executive positions, but it came with a price. Eventually, she lost her six-figure corporate job and her bitch persona. "Shedding the Corporate Bitch" is one woman’s real-life admission of what it’s like to sell one’s soul in exchange for ambition, greed and power at home and in the workplace. Its one woman’s apology to all the people she hurt over the years in pursuit of those goals. But most importantly, it’s her lessons, tips, and advice for aspiring corporate women who erroneously believe that ‘manning up’ and becoming a bitch in order to achieve career success that is valuable.

What is it to be a stand-up comedian? To be funny, solo? You have no character-role, no double-act partner, and nowhere to look but out into the darkness, with just a microphone, an audience and your imagination. This is a job without an annual appraisal; a job where you are publicly appraised every ten seconds. The results are harsh and obvious: if the audience isn't laughing, you 'died'; if they can't stop, you 'killed'. Deborah Frances-White and Marsha Shandur unpack the inner-workings of the minds of comics, sharing their secrets, insecurities and successes; their bêtes noires and their biggest fears. Featuring interviews with a host of comedians including Eddie Izzard, Moshe Kasher, Sarah Millican, Jim Jeffries, Stewart Lee, Lewis Black, Jenny Eclair, Todd Barry, Richard Herring, Marc Maron, Stephen K Amos, Rich Hall, Zoe Lyons, Marcus Brigstocke, Phill Jupitus, Gary Delaney, Mark Watson, Greg Davies and many more, this excellent book lets you in to the hearts and minds of celebrated comedians, away from the stage and off the mic.
