This book is an effort to consolidate and comprehensively present the coastal aquaculture & mariculture and divided into 39 chapters covering introduction, mariculture scenario, finfish farming, shellfish farming, molluscan farming, seaweed farming, recirculatory aquaculture systems, conservation aspects in mariculture etc. This is an attempt to provide comprehensive information on all areas of coastal aquaculture and mariculture to the students for their academic carrier. Nonetheless, the material presented has been thoughtfully selected and updated to make it of maximum use to the readers. This report is based on a review of literature and experience relating to the planning and management of aquaculture development and its integration into coastal area management. It explores in detail how more planned and integrated approaches can be applied to aquaculture development. These approaches range from "enhanced sectorial" initiatives, to incorporation within comprehensive ICM programmes.

This document is directed to aquaculture development specialists, coastal resource use planners and government officials involved and interested in the planning and management of coastal aquaculture development within the wider context of resource use in coastal areas. It is intended to serve in the promotion of environmental management of coastal aquaculture. Guidelines are given for improved environmental management of coastal aquaculture based on an overview of selected published experiences and concepts. Potential adverse environmental effects of and on coastal aquaculture practices are addressed with consideration of main socio-economic and bio-physical factors. Methodologies are presented for the assessment and monitoring of environmental hazards and impacts of coastal aquaculture. Selected environmental management options are described for application both at policy-level and farm-level.

This book presents various features of coastal aquacultural operations.

Inventory and monitoring of coastal aquaculture and fisheries structures provide important baseline data for decision-making in planning and development, including regulatory laws, environmental protection and revenue collection. Mapping these structures can be performed with good accuracy and at regular intervals by satellite remote sensing, which allows observation of vast areas, often of difficult accessibility, at a fraction of cost of traditional surveys. This study is based on interpretation of satellite imaging radar data and a detailed image analysis procedure id described. The report aims at the necessary technology transfer for and operational use of the approach indicated in other similar environments.

The successful development of coastal aquaculture in the opening years of the new millennium will depend upon solution of a multiplicity of economic, sociological, engineering, scientific and environmental issues. The objective of this volume is to update the current status of research in aquaculture in the coastal zone and outline directions for the development of sustainable aquaculture using modern methodologies. It also discusses the application of existing knowledge and the creation of new knowledge to ensure that aquaculture will develop at a sufficient pace to sustain and enhance the availability of high quality foods of aquatic origin in the human diet despite the global decline in the capture fishery.
