Research on photon and electron collisions with atomic and molecular targets and their ions has seen a rapid increase in interest, both experimentally and theoretically, in recent years. This is partly because these processes provide an ideal means of investigating the dynamics of many particle systems at a fundamental level and partly because their detailed understanding is required in many other fields, particularly astrophysics, plasma physics and controlled thermonuclear fusion, laser physics, atmospheric processes, isotope separation, radiation physics and chemistry and surface science. In recent years a number of important advances have been made, both on the experimental side and on the theoretical side. On the experimental side these include absolute measurements of cross sections, experiments using coincidence techniques, the use of polarised beams and targets, the development of very high energy resolution electron beams, the use of synchrotron radiation sources and ion storage rings, the study of laser assisted atomic collisions, the interaction of super-intense lasers with atoms and molecules and the increasing number of studies using positron beams.

The central subject of this volume is the atomic and molecular physics of heavy par ticles as investigated with charged particle accelerators. The natural division be tween atomic structure and ion-atom collision studies, and the similar division be tween the theoretical and experimental branches of these subjects, are reflected in a parallel subdivision into corresponding chapters. In addition, one chapter is de voted to the important interface between atomic and molecular physics with condensed matter physics. A principal aim of the present volume is to provide a compact de scription of a number of current interests and trends within the heavy particle structure and collisions field in a sufficiently general, non-specialized way that interested scientists who wish to become acquainted with such interests and trends can do so without becoming bogged down in excessive archival detail. It is, therefore, hoped that the book will be of some use to advanced students who seek a general in troduction to these subjects. Numerous, more specialized, archival review articles are frequently referred to in each chapter for the benefit of those who seek more detailed knowledge about particular topics discussed. The editor wishes to acknowledge the support of two U. S. government agencies: the Office of Naval Research and the National Science Foundation, during the preparation of this volume. Sincere thanks are due Mrs. Betty Thoe for her excellent editorial work on the various manuscripts and Mrs.

Dealing mainly with collisions of electrons and photons with heavy particles, Atomic Collisions discusses electron-electron and photon-electron collisions. The energy range covered extends from a few meV up to a few MeV (excluding collisions in which nuclear forces are important). Emphasis is on the mechanisms by which the various collisions take place; almost all of the scattering approximations used in atomic collision theory are considered. Topics covered include scattering resonances, coincidence measurements, merged-beam experiments, positron collisions, collisions between spin-polarized particles, GaAs polarized electron sources, position-sensitive detection, synchrotron radiation sources, cyclotron resonance masers, laser cooling and trapping, multiphoton processes, and more. The exposition is relatively self-contained and includes end-of-chapter notes and more than 200 problems.

Applied Atomic Collision Physics, Volume 4: Condensed Matter deals with the fundamental knowledge of collision processes in condensed media. The book focuses on the range of applications of atomic collisions in condensed matter, extending from effects on biological systems to the characterization and modification of solids. This volume begins with the description of some aspects of the physics involved in the production of ion beams. The radiation effects in biological and chemical systems, ion scattering and atomic diffraction, x-ray fluorescence analysis, and photoelectron and Auger spectroscopy are discussed in detail. The final two chapters in the text cover two areas of ion beam materials modification: ion implantation in semiconductors and microfabrication. This text is a good reference material for physics graduate students, experimental and theoretical physicists, and chemists.

Quantum Systems in Chemistry and Physics contains a refereed selection of the papers presented at the first European Workshop on this subject, held at San Miniato, near Pisa, Italy, in April 1996. The Workshop brought together leading experts in theoretical chemistry and molecular physics with an interest in the quantum mechanical many-body problem. This volume provides an insight into the latest research in this increasingly important field. Throughout the Workshop, the emphasis was on innovative theory and conceptual developments rather than on computational implementation. The various contributions presented reflect this emphasis and embrace topics such as density matrices and density functional theory, relativistic formulations, electron correlation, valence theory, nuclear motion, response theory, condensed matter, and chemical reactions. Audience: The volume will be of interest to those working in the molecular sciences and to theoretical chemists and molecular physicists in particular.
