This book is a detailed guide to the intra- and postoperative complications that may arise during the most frequently used laparoscopic techniques, with explanation of how and at what point in time they may arise, what can be done to avoid them, and how to deal with them if they do occur. Individual chapters, each written by an expert in the area, focus on the complications associated with the creation of pneumoperitoneum, laparoscopic cholecystectomy, laparoscopic management of gastroesophageal reflux disease, colorectal laparoscopic surgery, minimally invasive spleen surgery, and laparoscopic hernia repair (TAPP and TEP). Attention is drawn to useful tips and tricks and to the most critical points in surgical procedures, with a view to optimizing performance of techniques and avoiding pitfalls and complications. The concise, didactic text is enriched with informative drawings and photos and also with short video clips, available to the reader online, that will aid understanding. The book will be of value both for surgical residents and for more experienced surgeons.

Since the first laparoscopic appendectomy in September 1980, laparoscopy had been adapted to other type of surgery including gynaecology. Gynaecological laparoscopy was firstly introduced by European physicians Raoul Palmer and Has Frangenheim. It initially was used for both diagnostic and therapy purposes like tubal ligation.1 Along with the further development of operation technique, laparoscopy has been used in more complicated gynaecological surgery due to its offered advantages such as smaller wound, faster recovery time, better outcomes and accuracy. The human body's anatomy has not altered. However, advances in surgical techniques and the handling of complications are required due to technological advancements in operating materials and processes. Laparoscopy differs fundamentally from other operating techniques in that the initial entry is typically carried out while the patient is blind. Blind entrance can harm organs or vessels, especially in people who have had surgery in the past. One of the challenges with the entry is the potential for damage to go undetected for some time, requiring significant abdominal surgery. The development of surgical tools and methods has also made it possible for the surgeon to use the laparoscopic approach for even significant surgeries. This has a good correlation with new learning curves. 1,2 With its well-established advantages of minimizing blood loss, reducing post-operative pain, and shortening hospital stays, laparoscopic surgery has transformed patient care. Some of its unique characteristics in compared to open surgery include the use of a pneumoperitoneum, a minimally invasive entry into the belly, and the insertion of straight stick tools through tiny ports. These traits do, however, come with a special set of risks, such as haemodynamic instability, visceral injury, blood vessel damage, and problems related to poor ergonomics. However, the risk of complication such as wound infection, vomit, nausea, abdominal infection and septicaemia can’t be eliminated. Laparoscopic surgeries frequently involve the use of electrosurgery. The lengthier instruments are inserted through a trocar, which may be composed of plastic, metal,

The newly revised Second Edition of Small Animal Laparoscopy and Thoracoscopy is a rigorous update of the first book to provide comprehensive and current information about minimally invasive surgery in dogs and cats. With a focus on techniques in rigid endoscopy, the book also includes guidance on additional surgeries outside the abdomen and chest. New chapters describe newly developed surgical techniques, while existing chapters have been thoroughly updated. The authors include detailed stepwise instructions for each procedure, including clinical photographs. Pre-operative considerations, patient positioning, portal placement, and postoperative care are also discussed, with key points of consideration outlined for each surgery. Purchasers of the book will also receive access to a companion website featuring video clips of the fundamental skills and surgical techniques described in the resource. The book also offers: An introduction to laparoscopic suturing and knot tying with accompanying video tutorials A thorough introduction to the equipment used in laparoscopic and thoracoscopic veterinary surgeries, including imaging equipment, surgical instrumentation, energy devices, and stapling equipment Clear explanations of foundational techniques in laparoscopy, including laparoscopic anesthesia, access techniques, contraindications, complications, and conversion Robust descriptions of fundamental techniques in thoracoscopy, including patient positioning, port placement, contraindications, complications, and conversion Discussions of a wide variety of laparoscopic and thoracoscopic surgical procedures Small Animal Laparoscopy and Thoracoscopy is an essential reference for veterinary surgeons, veterinary internal medicine specialists and residents, and small animal general practitioners seeking a one-stop reference for minimally invasive surgery in dogs and cats.
