This book explores applications of computational intelligence in key and emerging fields of engineering, especially with regard to condition monitoring and fault diagnosis, inverse problems, decision support systems and optimization. These applications can be beneficial in a broad range of contexts, including: water distribution networks, manufacturing systems, production and storage of electrical energy, heat transfer, acoustic levitation, uncertainty and robustness of infinite-dimensional objects, fatigue failure prediction, autonomous navigation, nanotechnology, and the analysis of technological development indexes. All applications, mathematical and computational tools, and original results are presented using rigorous mathematical procedures. Further, the book gathers contributions by respected experts from 22 different research centers and eight countries: Brazil, Cuba, France, Hungary, India, Japan, Romania and Spain. The book is intended for use in graduate courses on applied computation, applied mathematics, and engineering, where tools like computational intelligence and numerical methods are applied to the solution of real-world problems in emerging areas of engineering.

Logic for Artificial Intelligence and Information Technology is based on student notes used to teach logic to second year undergraduates and Artificial Intelligence to graduate students at the University of London since1984, first at Imperial College and later at King's College. Logic has been applied to a wide variety of subjects such as theoretical computer science, software engineering, hardware design, logic programming, computational linguistics and artificial intelligence. In this way it has served to stimulate the research for clear conceptual foundations. Over the past 20 years many extensions of classical logic such as temporal, modal, relevance, fuzzy, probabilistic and non-monotoinic logics have been widely used in computer science and artificial intelligence, therefore requiring new formulations of classical logic, which can be modified to yield the effect of the new applied logics. The text introduces classical logic in a goal directed way which can easily deviate into discussing other applied logics. It defines the many types of logics and differences between them. Dov Gabbay, FRSC, FAvH, FRSA, FBCS, is Augustus De Morgan Professor of Logic at the University of London. He has written over 300 papers in logic and over 20 books. He is Editor-in-Chief of several leading journals and has published over 50 handbooks of logic volumes. He is a world authority on applied logics and is one of the directors and founder of the UK charity the International Federation of Computational Logic

This edited book presents scientific results of the 4th International Conference on Applied Computing and Information Technology (ACIT 2016) which was held on December 12–14, 2016 in Las Vegas, USA. The aim of this conference was to bring together researchers and scientists, businessmen and entrepreneurs, teachers, engineers, computer users, and students to discuss the numerous fields of computer science and to share their experiences and exchange new ideas and information in a meaningful way. The aim of this conference was also to bring out the research results about all aspects (theory, applications and tools) of computer and information science, and to discuss the practical challenges encountered along the way and the solutions adopted to solve them. The conference organizers selected the best papers from those papers accepted for presentation at the conference. The papers were chosen based on review scores submitted by members of the Program Committee, and underwent further rigorous rounds of review. This book captures 11 of the conference’s most promising papers, and the readers impatiently await the important contributions that they know these authors are going to bring to the field of computer and information science.
