Clara Lucas Balfour nee Liddell (1808- 1878) was a British novelist and temperance activist. She educated herself by reading extensively. Temperance, social justice, and feminism were important themes in her writing and speaking. These themes influenced her reading of scripture. Balfour wrote over seventy works on temperance over a forty-year period. Her works include: Women of Scripture (1847), Working Women of the Last Half Century: The Lessons of Their Lives (1854), The Confessions of a Decanter (1862), The Bible Patterns of a Good Woman (1867) and Women Worth Emulating (1877).

"Confessions of a Living Historian: A Decade of the Antics and Misadventures of a Civil War Reenactor" is the story of Darin Richardson's first ten years as a Civil War reenactor in the most unlikeliest of places: Oregon, in the Pacific Northwest of the United States. This book chronicles his beginnings as a reenactor up to the time he quit the hobby, then his return to it in recent years. Locating their writing in the context of their personal commitment, the study takes seven prolific writers who were outside what we now think of as the circuits of conventional publication and authorship, and looks at how they found ways to make their voices heard. Their absorption in a cause led them to forge impressive writing careers in a variety of genres and media, focusing around high-circulation temperance periodicals. Examining their cultural contributions as well as their professional lives confirms the importance of the temperance movement in the second half of the nineteenth century, and raises questions about distribution practices and values, and distinctions between "life" and "work."
