Contextualising Rural Education In South African Schools

South Africa's democratic government inherited a divided and unequal system of education. Under apartheid, South Africa had nineteen different educational departments separated by race, language, geography and ideology. This education system prepared learners in different ways for the positions they were expected to occupy in social, economic and political life under apartheid and was funded and resourced in ways that favoured white people and disadvantaged black people who remain in the working class. The newly elected democratic government in 1994 laid a foundation for a single national education system. Twenty-five years after the dawn of democracy, education is still in a parlous state in many communities in South Africa, but it is in the rural areas mainly in the former homelands that learners are most disadvantaged. This examination graphically illustrates the conditions that make dreams of a better life for all virtually unrealizable in rural areas of South Africa. Through the voices of rural people themselves, this study tells not only what the problems surrounding education are but also what can and should be done when the South African government launches its offensive against poverty in rural areas. Rigorous and qualitative, the text is an overview of the need of great numbers of people for the opportunities and capabilities that education can provide for their futures. It also shows the existing situation of many impoverished populations worldwide and illustrates that poverty and inequality continue where such issues are not addressed.

7 The Research Study

The quality of education is pivotal for the production of human capital and this cannot be compromised by failing to refocus on the quality of education offered in schools. The inputs in the system such as trained and motivated teachers, buildings and classrooms including sanitation, clean water, instructional material such as textbooks, as well as strong leadership with vision to steer the winds of change are important in providing the desired outcomes. The chapters in this volume are broadly divided into three subsections as follows: learner related issues, (farm and rural schools, poverty and schooling, school violence, and students rights); teacher related issues,(teacher morale and motivation, teachers for all schools, management needs of school principals); and administrative/policy related issues (inclusive education, and school community relations). The social demand for better schools, effective principals, qualified and committed teachers and better opportunities for all place a huge challenge to provinces and the state to protect the rights of all citizens. This volume sets out the challenges facing the education system in South Africa, such as poor school infrastructure, poor learning conditions, and a lack of learning materials and provides recommendations on how some of these can be overcome.

This unique and timely book focuses on research conducted into the experiences of students from rural backgrounds in South Africa: foregrounding decolonial perspectives on their negotiation of access and transitions to higher education. This book highlights not only the challenges of coming from a rural background against the historical backdrop of apartheid and ongoing colonialism, but also shows the immense assets that students from rural areas bring into higher education. Through detailed narratives created by student co-researchers, the book charts early experiences in rural communities, negotiations of transitions to university and, in many cases, to urban life and students’ subsequent journeys through higher education spaces and curricula. The book will be of significant interest and value to those engaged in rurality research across diverse settings, those interested in the South African higher education context and higher education more widely. Its innovative, participatory methodology will be invaluable to researchers seeking to conduct collaborative research that draws on decolonising approaches.

This book explores rurality and education in sub-Saharan Africa through a lens of social justice. The first in a two-volume project, this book explores the possibilities and constraints of rural social justice in diverse educational contexts: how should rurality be defined? How does education shape and reshape what it means to be rural? Drawing chapters from a diverse range of contributors in sub-Saharan Africa, the two volumes are underpinned by a robust social justice approach to rural schooling and its intersections with access, gender, colonialism, social mobility and dis/ability. Ultimately, these volumes reflect the need to shift conceptions of rurality from colonial and conservative stereotypes to an appreciation of rurality as locations in space and time, with their own unique attributes and opportunities. Harnessing indigenous African concepts of justice to open up conversations into teaching and knowledge production in higher education, this book will be of interest to scholars of rurality and education, as well as wider discussions on decolonising the academy.
