Excerpt from Conversations With Distinguished Persons, During the Second Empire, From 1860 to 1863, Vol. 1 of 2 The great interest excited by the two volumes of Mr. Senior's Journals, published in 1878, has induced me to accede to the demand for more. The present series will be found no less instructive and entertaining than the last. In some cases, where the speakers have not yet retired from public life, I have been forced to give initials instead of their full names; but it is sad to observe how seldom this has been necessary. Two of Mr. Senior's intimate friends have died whilst this book has been going through the press. It will be a matter of general regret that the Conversations in 1863 form the last of Mr. Senior's Journals. The illness which was to take him from us began in a general feeling of lassitude towards the end of that summer, and early in the following June he passed away There are still in MS. his Egyptian and Algerian journals, and many portions of his Continental journals.
